Old License Plates. Who’s got them?

Just a few Tennessee plates I have. I've repainted a few in their original colors because I don't know how it is in other states, but in Tennessee you can actually permanently register an antique auto with an original plate from that year, so a few of them are actually tied to my project cars. The '31 plate was given to my great uncle because that was the year he was born and I ended up with it. The '47 plate in the lower left corner was given to me by a friend of mine after he dug it up in Nashville in the 80's while he was building a shop. Pretty rough but not bad for being underground. And lastly the plate that's on my '58 Dodge. It's the same color and condition of the truck so it matches perfect.

  2. @MRW1994 I do love those state shaped Tennessee plates! Unfortunately, I’ve yet to find one that I can afford. :)

@37hotrod it's been so long since I bought one I just looked some up and you are right they've shot up to crazy prices! Especially the orange 1951 plates I guess for the people that are crazy about Tennessee orange.

Since we’re talking about funky shaped license plates, here’s one of my favorites.

I've got one, and one only. It's actually hanging in my garage now, I took it off the car.

Man I realized yesterday after snowblowing the driveway and walking past the covered Ford how much I'm looking forward to spring so I can drive it again.

    Here's a better picture..... Untitled-design-69.png
It's only 5 bucks for a renewal... 20 bucks if you want it personalized...

  9. @Deuces That’s cool. Oregon did the same thing a few years ago with the blue and yellow “Pacific Wonderland” plates. Had those on several cars when I lived there.

Picked up a few older New York plates recently. Didn’t have any with the “Empire State” motto on them yet. Now I do.

  11. I had my phone with me in the garage last night, so I shot these. A souvenir tag for the 350th anniversary of the founding of Jamestown VA, and a NACA tag which might have been used on "company" vehicles. NACA was the precursor of NASA. And there are some of the tags I had on my daily, SAM 57, plus some donations.

  12. @57 HEAP I think that’s the first time I’ve seen inside your shop. Nice place. That NACA plate is amazing!

Picked these plates up at the Symco Shakedown, or Symco Weekender, not sure what they call it anymore. Found them in the swap meet area.

  16. @pigIRON63 Alright, that’s more than just a few! No wonder I can’t find one. Now I know where they all went! Didn’t you do a restoration on one that was pretty far gone?

Breaking news! Another new arrival here at the farm. Look closely, this is another plate with the numbers debossed, instead of being raised. Love unusual plates.

  19. I want to add a 56 or back Tennessee to my collection, but I want to complete my 48 state 1957 run first.

Here is hard one to find, 1943 Tennessee "tab". This one is wearing it's original paint.
Because of the war efforts, there were no full size plates made in 1943. Instead, these "tabs" were issued. They bolted to the bottom lefthand corner of the out of date 1942 plate and were ran together. 2708.jpg 20210829_212102.jpg

@pigIRON63 I noticed that tab in your pictures but had no idea what it was. That's very interesting and I bet there's hardly any of those around anymore.

I have a lot of the metal tabs from the 50s and 60s, but only 2 from the 40s. These are both from Wisconsin.
