Sorry if this is the wrong place to post this question, I'm not a frequent poster but doing my best to follow the rules. I fell in love with and almost bought the 1940 Willys Gasser known as "Orange+" in 2013 when it was up for sale on Ebay (see: https://bringatrailer.com/2013/03/28/lions-in-1967-1940-willys-orange-plus-coupe/). At the end of the day, I wasn't able to gather sufficient funds so I missed it. But now I would like to find this car again, and perhaps do a period restoration, if the owner will sell. Does anyone know where the car might be? Thanks
There’s a post on this site claiming to be the original orange plus for sale. Posted in December 2021
Back in the 80's when I had the Orange plus Willys running on the street I took a (not romantic) lady friend for a ride and tried to impress her with the awesome acceleration. We were rolling at about 10 mph, I engaged the clutch, wound it up and dumped the clutch. Usually when I did this it would dig in and launch down the road and you had better be holding on. Well his time the rear end swung out and I was instantly off the gas and correcting it full lock one way then the other all at about 15 mph until it went all the way around and backed into a parked car in slow motion. Still the most embarassing moment of my life. There was no floor in the trunk at the time and the fiberglass trunk lid was a very light weight skin only so the rear panel folded in and looked terrible. I drove it home and it just so happened that I had just bought another coupe body. I looked everything over and the quickest, easiest fix was to cut both bodies through the windshield pillar and below the quarter panels and just switch them out. the only real bodywork was minor pillar repair. so that is why the roof and quarter panels were removed from the original car. I repaied the car and pieced together the body and traded it to a friend in San Diego for a 36 Willys pick up. It is true to say the roof and quarter panels on the car for sale are from the Orange plus, removed to repair the car. The car is still together and running, original frame, rear end, doors, front end, cowl, and much more.
That is also why it ended up in primer and then painted white. Owner after me pained it back to Orange with lettering.
Hello everyone, Am I missing something here? What happened to my old "Orange Plus" Willys? Previously owned by Kiwi Kev, then Brad Barrie/Bill Fowler . I owned the car around 10 years ago, and it was super clean. I removed the modern decals, but left the lettering. I also had Hurst make me a set of pie crust slicks, and bought a vintage set of pointy 5 spoke Americans from Don Waldron of Rods West. Beautiful polished 15" small window kidney bean Halibrands up front. The car was a cream puff when I sold it to a retired Sheriff in Southern Louisiana , and it breaks my heart to see it in its current condition. This doesn't make sense. How it looked when I owned it.
So the one for sale in Michigan is just the old wrecked rear clip? And it has been mated to another cowl, frame, fenders, doors, and nose then? That would make that car a fraud then. Someone should tell the guy who has it for sale.
