Hot Rods Looking for spray gun technique advice

I'll be ready to spray the coupe in the next few weeks and while going over things I noticed that I am going to have to get up under the visor. In doing so I have to turn the gun so the pot is horizontal or upside down. How do the more experienced gunslingers do this ? This will be my 5th spray job . I Bought a decent Iwata gun recently and I have a smaller touch up gun . I tried doing a "dry run" and still seem to have to turn the gun over too far.

Any suggestions or tips to try?

If you are one of the guys with a welded on visor, use a pressure feed gun. I have a few, one being a very small thumb trigger Devilbiss that is good for getting into tight spots in any position.
I just set whatever size paint can into my pressure tank and use this gun for doing door jams or any other small hard to reach areas.

 

Rattle can the underside then tape it off to paint the rest. A decent paint supplier can mix almost any color in a rattle can.

 

Old school siphon paint gun?

 

Pressure pot. Also, you can use a gravity feed and turn the fan down close to a bullet. Carefully tilt the gun and baby the paint on.

 

If not HVLP or pressure pot, Can ya turn the tip for sideways pattern and use rubber hose to siphon from a mixing cup?


Or Brush, they used to paint em all that way.

 

I guess I should have painted it BEFORE I installed it. If I can get away without taking it off it will make my life easier. At least I gave it a coat of epoxy before I put it on.

Scott , I was actually thinking of doing that . In the summer I painted my OT Dodge truck and when I painted the trim I got a spray bomb of bumper paint that had a real nice nozzle and spray pattern , I'm going black so I may try to find the same brand of paint with the magic nozzle.....I think it was Pro Form .

 

Take the visor off if you can.

Gravity feed gun with 3M PPS cup system or generic version of it.

 

I’ve done two model A’s with the visor on, the gun doesn’t need to be completely horizontal. Just make sure the vent on the pot is on the high side. Done it with both siphon feed and gravity.

 

Yes, use the cup system that replaces the cup with a bag and cup. No air no matter what direction you hold it.

 

Yep, and believe it or not, the Harbor Freight version is reasonable and works well.

 

The pot/cup screws to the side of this gun and is infinitely adjustable. I can't promise the pot/cup won't get in the way of the spray when used at certain angles though. I guess you could swap on a 4" hose to get the pot/cup off to the side more and have someone hold it. I dunno, just tossing this out there ...

 

I'm going to suggest a totally different approach.

There are just some instances where using a spray gun is not the best way to lay down paint.
For example, the back side of roof drip rails. Or the insides of a door ***embly. Or under the visor.

USE A BRUSH

In those instances above it is far better to insure good complete coverage of the area than to go for Ridler quality finish. A gl***-like finish is no good if rust starts to bleed through the seams in years to come. In the case of the drip rails it required I heat the plastic handle of a small paint brush and bend the bristles at a 45 degree angle to get behind the drip rail. Most people will not look up when in your car to scrutinize the quality of the paint under the visor. Besides, a brushed finish will flow out with a little practice and the right type of thinner and a good brush. My $0.02.

Short of turning the body upside down a-la rotisserie that's all I got.

If you have a siphon feed gun a simple bag in the cup will allow it to spray upside down.

 

I'm not sure about using a brush but I agree with FF that most people will not see way up under the visor.
So , now if I'm out and I see someone looking up under my visor I can ***ume it's one of you guys trying to get under my skin.
I'll see how bad it it is to remove the visor without trashing all the work I have done. Getting all those little nails out without bending things all to **** is the challenge....... decisions , decisions .

 

This would be my suggestion as well.

I don't spray enough to have super professional guns, but I bought a couple of those Harbor Freight "Black Widow" guns, the best ones they offer that are basically a copy of the Sata 5000. They even sell the adapters at the store to use the cup and bag. I put the 3M PPS 2.0 system on mine and it works well. When you put the bag on full of paint, it's best to turn the gun upside down and pull the trigger to pull the air out of it, at which point you will be able to paint in any direction without concern for gravity feed. My biggest beef with the system is that it is a bit pricey and you tend to waste a little more paint than if you were just pouring it into a gravity fed cup.

 

If gl*** removal isn't bad then do that an paint from inside.

 

Gl*** is out so spraying from inside is possible , its just that with the regulator on the gun it makes turning the gun tough but not impossible.

 

I chrome stuff like that visor so I don’t have to paint it. Pro tip

 

I'm no expert, but my understanding is to paint all the hidden areas with the car apart. Door jambs, hinges, mounting areas for fenders and visor, backside/underside and mounting flanges of fenders, etc. Then ***emble the car, get fitment as good as possible, then paint the visible areas in one smooth go, especially if using metallic or flake.

If your visor is on before paint, how do you paint the mounting faces? Just leave it in primer if it's out of sight?

 

I've been know to attach the regulator to be me belt. Hose to reg, short hose to gun. That and the much smaller PPS type cup, makes a huge difference in maneuverability in tight spots.

I came up with this. It should work. It's still got to warm up a bit.

 

That looks like a good solution but in the interest of maximum coverage, I wouldn't rule out shooting from the inside too.

 

Can you take the windshield out and spray from inside the car?
