She ran a little low on fluid and in drive with the 3500 stall converter she freewheeled a bit until I shifted down into second and I could hit a gas station and get some fluid. Filled her up and she ran fin all the way home. I parked it in the driveway running and opened up the garage. Backing into the garage she is leaving a trail of fluid and left about an 8" diameter pool. It is coming out of that little rubber grommet looking thing in the pan in a steady stream after turning the car off. What does this little grommet thing do? should it be ******* fluid? I may have overfilled it cause I chopped the dipstick and tube off so it fits under the floor of my roadster. I need to drive it to a big show sunday and dont want to be dumping ****** fluid by the quart. thanks
little rubber grommet thing in the pan? never seen one....maybe you could describe it better, where exactly it is, etc.
it is a black rubber plug looking thing in the bottom of the ****** pan in the front drivers side of the pan.
is it in the ****** case? maybe one of the gizmos shown here? if so, what color? or is it somewhere else? the pan itself doesn't have any rubber gizmos in it, unless it's been modified.
There's also supposed to be an "O" ring seal around the grove near the end of the filler tube that will leak if it's not installed, not in the groove or ****ed sideways (to get floor clearance like you said?) In an emergency... Pampers/Depends!
Some early Th350's had a drain plug in the pan. Maybe someone lost the plug and stuffed a grommet in there that didn't seal it properly.
i had a mazda that did this. jiffy lube and any other quick lubes for that matter, when servicing trannies, the punch a hole and then put a rubber plug in it. i hope thats not what happened. i just took the pan off and welded up the hole with a plug. hope thats not what it is.
well, itf it's in the pan, take pan off and weld the hole shut. there's nothing that's gonna bite ya in that pan(or shouldn't be)
now that I crawled back under it in the daylight (or rain) it looks as though someone punched the pan and put a plug in it. I'll thread a bolt in it for tommorrow then drop the pan monday and weld it up.... some people are really really stupid.
Hopefully this questions isn't tooo dumb...the o-ring isn't supposed to be in the groove on the dipstick tube? My ****** leaks like a seive from the dipstick hole ...where exactly should that o ring go if not in the groove? Should there also (or instead) be one just under the lip on the tube? Thanks, Bryan
the o-ring should be in the groove. Make sure it's the correct o-ring, and make sure the dipstick tube is not bent or squashed or cracked, this is a common problem. If you have a newer style dipstick tube, it uses a rubber collar instead of an o-ring, and does not have a groove.
Cool...that's what I thought. Since it's the original dipstick tube and I've tried a couple new o-rings, I figured I'd replace it. I've heard the tube that uses the collar style seals better...is this the case? I actually was going to try all this before posting up questions since it's pretty basic, but this thread came up and I decided to sneak it in Thanks, Bryan
yeah, the collar type is much better....and to install it you put the collar in the trans first, then poke the tube into it. Use lube
also it needs to be anchored somewhere, the o ring only seals against the case, if the tube is wobbling around it won't seal. stock gm's were attached to a bellhousing bolt on the th350's. one other thing on the pan, b&m makes a drain plug kit that you can buy at pep boys, it makes it into a piggy back bolt which might be to low or you can buy a chorme pan for the time being.
