Baker Automotive Cad Powered 1959 El Camino

    Hello,

One of the first fast drag cars we parked next to us was this fawn beige/ tan brown 1959 Chevy El Camino. It was a nice color and the white top looked good, too. We did not hear it roll into the spot, so, to us, it was just another 335 hp 1959 El Camino in the S/S class. Those 335 hp 348 Chevy sedans and El Caminos were the top racers in that class.

But, as we got our stuff together, there was some tuning going on in the next pit area. The fawn beige/ tan brown El Camino lifted the hood and started up. Wow, that was not a stock 335 hp 348 motor !!!

Much to our surprise, (and to most in the Lions Dragstrip Pits area) it was a Cadillac motor with a supercharger on top. The sound was outstanding and then we knew it was a race car for the Gas Coupe and Sedan Class. The sound from the motor and exhaust was deafening and drew a big crowd. We thought the motor sounded very healthy and could not wait to see it run.

With the tremendous horsepower doing a number on the rear wheels, the whole El Camino gets in a lowered look, almost "taildragger" style. The horsepower just shoves the rear down upon acceleration. No “nose in the air” stance Gas Coupe or Sedan look for this El Camino, it was pure adrenaline power.

The tailgate down for smooth air flow and not a bug catcher tailgate effect, despite being a ¼ mile run.

Finally, one truck that surprised everyone: The Baker Automotive fawn beige/ tan brown 1959 El Camino with handicapped controls for the driver, and a supercharged Cadillac

Got it from Fremont, CA. Shipped here to MD. Some Finishing was needed on the body, and chassis was complete with a fresh 427. All glass, trim, and bumpers were in boxes. Put it together and enjoyed it for a couple years. I shoulda kept it.

  15. That one is in DE. The guy who built that (in 1981) just stopped by and bought an exterior visor from me for his 56 Ford sedan delivery. He’s been trying to buy it back since he found it but the current owner is letting it sit and rot.
