Howdy! Working on al all original factory lacquer car and need to address some small random rust spots. These are very small spots the result of rock chips, etc. The paint is 99% excellent.

I have acquired a quart of lacquer and medium thinner from TCP Global. If I buzz the rust off, what is the best way to treat the bare metal spot before going over it with the new lacquer? Rust areas are the size of a pea or less. The color is a spot on match and I know it will blend nicely. I am just concerned about a reaction to a modern primer. This is a preservation project, so lacquer is a must. Thanks.

I restore vintage toys and work exclusively in lacquer. This is the best lacquer based primer I have found. Bondo 720 (black is 721) is available on Amazon.
On small spots, I've sprayed some into the cap, let it set-up/thicken for about 5 minutes, and apply to the spot with a Q Tip or fine brush.

You can use etch primer under lacquer over bare metal. Then fill primer then color, the biggest thing is to give each product time to dry before the next.

  4. Lacquer will not react with any new primers once they are fully catalyzed.
