Picked up a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee box at wrecking yard. Made mounding plate after mocking everything up and was able to use a couple of the original holes in frame. The frame has to be notched to make room for the jeep box, but there is room. Just make sure there is a bit of space between box and upper A arm bolt. I decided to re-shape the Jeep pitman. Lots of heat and burry in sand so it cools slow. The Pitman small end diameter is to large, so i found an insert at a 4x4 site. That made it fit the tie rod. I know some guys used the original pitman and expanded the large end. If anyone wants more info, send me an email jimpeg1@hotmail.com and i can answer any questions...Jim
If I remember correctly all the Jeep Cherokee series steering boxes interchange but the Grand Cherokees have a "Quicker" ratio than the standard Cherokee. I believe the first generation Grand Cherokees (ZJ) have the most desirable ratio for swapping into a car. Typically there are plenty of Cherokees to pick over at the junkyards. They sold a ton of them.
I believe 1999-2002 Grand cherokee boxes are the same. I never looked at other jeep boxes, but the main thing was the distance to the pitman so it can swing under the frame. 2000 is what i used...Are Cherokee and Grand Cherokee the same??? I dont know. I really like my steering ratio and the 1 finger steering is a real plus for me..
