For a quarter of my driving life I enjoyed driving an off topic air cooled vintage automobile. In fact I have owned over 42 of them. I looked to check my speed and could easily see the speed, fuel level, and at least two other notifications of my vehicle from one gauge. I drove several other off topic 4 wheel drive vehicles as a second car whose lineage ***isted the allies in WW2 and Korea. Those were also equiped with a single multi-gauge to monitor conditions of the vehicle.

I am gathering parts for a future build and would like to use a gauge that has gauges within a gauge. One neat round gauge or a rectangle perhaps. I do like the mid 50's Chevrolet truck gauge shaped like a V or the 49 - 50 Ford sedan's round speedometer.
It will be mounted in a flat dash but I can "sculpt" as need for the right look.

Can you recommend a year, make and model of vehicle to look for with a speedometer that contains oil pressure, temperature and fuel level all in one cluster?

  3. Can,t beat a '39 Lincoln Zephyr but it might be a little on the large size for behind the steering wheel. Original position was in the middle of the dash and if memory serves me it was about 8 inch diameter. Then there is also the make/brand of car text/logo that might not match your car.

Another option: ‘49-‘51 Ford car. Poor picture here but has all the functions.

I think the Nash Aeroflyt did something similar, ^ came in a kinda-bullet-shaped container, mounted on/above the steering column.

Why don’t you find an air cooled gauge that has an appropriate font/ lettering style and run with it? Don’t think anyones going to recognize it in a negative fashion?

50 Chevy had that top is oem bottom is a/m

Chrysler’s from the early 50’s had a neat jukebox looking dash not quite all in one like a Chevy but still neat .

    That has crossed my mind.

I suppose I have one in a box with some old Solex carburetors. From what I remember the speedometer was driven by a cable that ran to the front left hub. It counted the revolutions of the wheel and converted to mph. That may take some engineering to be used in a coupe or roadster. The other portions of the gauge would be experimenting with sending units from the original vehicle.

I used a 50 Ford in my Model A. However, I'm tall and I have to lean down to read the upper gauges. IMG_1377.JPG

Something you need to consider is that many of the older OEM type guages that meet your design needs are going to be 6 volt and have an amp guage instead of a volt guage. They can be upgraded and modified by some of the more progressive aftermarket guage manufacturers ($). Most of the 56 and later are 12 volt but usually not round.

    most mechanical speedometers that
Attach to a trans are cable driven and calibratable in some fashion so I’m sure there’s probably a way to make it work?

    Good tip!

  25. The 50 and 51 Ford's are different diameter's in case you were unaware. The aftermarket has many options that are around $800 which I would think you know. You will look at that panel a lot. Pick what makes you smile when you look at it.

The speedometer in that off topic cl***ic air cooled car would be set up for 790 revolutions be mile (480 revolutions per kilometer) (or so). As long as the gears between the transmission tail shaft and the speedo give 790 revs per mile, that off topic speedometer would work just fine.

USA speedo's are 1000 drive shaft revolutions per mile, I believe.

Close, 1000 cable revolutions per mile is what you probably meant to say.
