anyone ever hear of who built copperhead for billy gibbons? I have customer who is wanting a custom shoebox and likes the look of the top, and would like to find out the details on the car (like if they used a donor top or if it was hand built)

Yep. That's one of the coolest Shoeboxes of all time. Love the black/copper combo.

the top was fabricated by so-cal. it was not a donor top. there used to be pics from the article in hot rod mag on hotrod.com i think. im pretty sure it was in the features section.

I was in So-Cal about a month ago. They are working on an El-Camino for him now. Pretty sweet.

Most of these guys said So-Cal Speed Shop, but that's not exactly true. That car was built being built in 94/95 @ Pete's home shop in Crestline CA. Jake Chopped the top along with Rick Lefevers & they used a donor vehicles doors & flipped them around & and grafted them to make it look like a 3 window coupe.(If somebody posts some shots, take a good look @ the doors.) The vehicle was brought down to Pomona in I believe March of 95 and was finished up @ PC3g which was a Re-Pete & Jake’s of the old group in Temple City but with some new adittional faces, John Carambia,Tim Beard, Mike Cardenas,Ted Ledane, Carol Chapouris=(wife) & Pete Chapouris #4.There might be a couple that I forgot.

The Petersen Automotive Museum had that car on display for several years, with graphic photos take during the vehicles construction. I'm sure if you talk to Pete or Carol they might be able to give details of the cars construction.
Give it a shot I was there during the vehicles construction but I think it would be better to try & get some real photos from them, For anyones information.
SO-CAL was reborn in November of 97 and it was announced & the California NHRA Hot Rod Reunion.:D

I read somewhere that it took 500 hours for the roof and doors and doors from 5 shoeboxes to make it. One of my favorite shoeboxes of all time. I dig the factory custom look. One of those cars that makes you think "why didn't Ford ever build one like this?"

  13. What she said.....

I saw it at The Petersen several years ago, musta spent half an hour drooling down the fender ;)

Stunning car, from what I remember, the idea was to make it look as tho Ford had made a 3-window...worked for me :D

Check out the February 1996 issue of Rod & Custom for an article on this car with several bare-metal shots of the doors and top under construction that show how they were modified to make it a three-window. There's also a fold-out centerfold of Kopperhed, too...

I wonder how much you had to pay them back then to do a foldout?

What are you, a communist? Do you have something against Gibbons because he has more money than you? Or do you think he shouldn't spend his money on cars? Where does YOUR extra cash go?

****, this is a bad *** ****ing car. Nothing on it is overdone to show off the size of the investment. The money went to top builders. You know, the kind of guys who hang out here on the HAMB. Perhaps it would be better if guys like Gibbons just bought luxury cars, and sent all their money to mega-corporations?

It's not like Billy is cruzin' around with diamond studded 24's, flashing his gold fronts while he spits beluga at widows wating for the bus.

WTF is with the money=evil at***ude? As soon as I'm rich, remind me to take a huge **** on your lawn.

I do love the car, but using 5 shoeboxes to make the thing is silly.
I mean, c'mon now, you can buy sheet metal and make what you need, you know....

...the hat is an Ashente cap from the Bameleke tribe in Cameroon, worn to signify prestige within the community.... CKD August 2006 pg32

Don't know if it was a gift from the tribe or whatever, I just think it's pretty cool.

I wish I was that cool.

Kinda' looks like a pinecone - but in a good way. :D

The car really does look like a factory piece. And even if this one was built with a lot of money involved, I don't think it's unreasonable to think a good home builder couldn't come up with something very comparable.

Well done in my book, plus ZZtop makes some kick-*** music, and the Eliminator coupe on the cover of that album brought back hotrods and introduced the public to street rods, like it or not. Billy Gibbons and ZZtop are important to the history of rodding.

  26. Was wondering why I couldn't find much on Google regarding this car.

It's because Copperhead is actually spelt KOPPERHED.

See kids, spelling is important. ;)
