Folks Of Interest Rodders Journal Update

I can honestly say I have never picked up an issue of The Rodders journal however I can say that people succeed because they have people that believe in them/their product.

Oh, also, I love to read, I’ll read almost anything…

 

he probally wasn't a great writer in the world of literture but who influinced more young guys in to gearheads than henry gregory felson. back in the early days as a kid the hot rod magizines were about the pictures, even the ads were hot, but what kid didn't dream of being just like bud crane

 

Steve Coonan has said many times that he wants to take photos that make people say, “man, what a cool car,” not “what a cool photo.” I think the same should go for writing about hot rods. “What a great story” should be the goal, not “what a great article.”



That was Ken Gross’ opener to the story about Rulon McGregor’s perfectly subtle ‘39 Merc custom in TRJ #21 (2002), and it’s one of my favorites. Reading it put me there on the lakes, heart sinking. To me, it was just a great story (albeit a sad one).

I met Steve in 2010, went to work for TRJ in 2011, and was there until things went south last year. I have immense respect for his knowledge and passion for hot rodding, and I consider him one of my best friends. I can’t argue with anyone who’s angry with the way things went down in terms of the lack of communication, but I do know that Steve has done nothing but work toward making things right and getting the magazine back on its feet. It seems like he’s now getting some traction. We talk regularly, and he’s even shared some layouts for the upcoming issue. I’m so excited to see it printed. It’s a bitchin group of cars, killer photography, and I think you guys will dig it.

 

I enjoyed C9 here and Ganahl in print. The one thing that TRJ lacks, and which prevents me from joining the “ best ever car magazine” cult, is its lack of DIY tech. Rodders Digest, Mechanix Illustrated, and others in the same vein were better than TRD.

 

I truly hope that TRJ can get back on their feet. I was disappointed when they shut down. When the world stopped many businesses ceased to exist and many people lost their dreams. Losing the money from my side is small potatoes to the owners losing it all.
When they can get going again I will buy again.

 

....Well said, Curt. For anyone who doesn't know, Ken Gross is a die-hard Hot-Rodder and true historian of the culture. I love his writing, not to mention all of his cars.

As far as punctuation is concerned, there was an author that wrote a book with no punctuation at all. at the end of the book he had several pages of the missing punctuation. As far as proof reading is concerned, look at your local newspaper. It seems that learning spelling doesn't exist in school curriculums any more.

 

My definition of a good writer is one who can bring you into the moment. Hank Felsen certainly did that. Without pictures and without fancy turns of phrase, every character lived in his words. Hank inspired a generation of budding gearheads. What better epitaph could a writer hope for.

on the subject of writers, i've noticed something strange. normally when reading, i hear it in my own voice. not to say i'm reading out loud, it's the words coming off the page, my mind hears them in my own voice.

for some reason, when reading something from sonny barger, my mind is hearing it in his voice. it happened once before when reading a book by g gorden liddy. i don't know if it's because i've heard these two speak and that they both have a distinctive voice, but when i read anything from them, my mind hears them talking

You have to understand, most of that was tongue in cheek. We used to talk at 1am and chit since he was always up and on West Coast time. If you met him today he would blow your mind.

After reading all of Ryan's posts on this thread, I'm feeling pretty proud that he printed a couple of stories I wrote about some of the things I did in my youth. Thanks Ryan.

It’s all entertainment at some point.
The awesome tech stuff here is the best and fun to learn from.
The recurring themes (everything new sux, the sky is falling, what oil to use, pinion angle, crap cost too much, crap ain’t bringing $$$$). All those are fun to read.

The “did you ever” threads….ok
The “that never happened” stuff that usually turns into “well, it might have but was very rare”…..are the best

since most of (possibly all) the automotive TV shows are hard to watch, this place serves to fill that void.
So ya also get the rants, alcohol induced responses, stay off my lawn attitudes ……all still very entertaining.

I think the Medical term is “Word Salad” which describes it perfect. But as Tman stated, and I follow Germ on IG, he does some great welding work. What a turn around….Very impressive….

 

I'm with you Mark, At that time I honestly didn't know what to think, but I did know all his psychotic or drunken ramblings had absolutely nothing to do with hot rods or customs.

The last time germ posted he was asking questions about a model a roadster, I was shocked to read the last sentience in his thread. This just didn't sound like the germ from the past. HRP
