buddy asked me to paint his roadster and TWO louvered deck lids. he asked that i make sure the inside was thoroughly painted. in the past i have set the spray gun to "garden hose" and flooded the inside, then blew it around with a blow gun with an 18" x 3/16 steel brake line for a nozzle. this time i decided to make a 180 degree nozzle for my shoots gun.
1 what have you guys done?
2 which deck lid do you like better?

after a couple coats, it started to seep out of the seams. another friend has one of those scopey things that he is going to bring over to double check we have not missed any spots on the inside.
brady1929 and homemadehardtop57 how did you guys get paint on the inside?

Seven, though many times I do six rows in the same spacing as the hood so it all matches front to back.

I like the 5 rows better. Somehow 7 seems to be a little excessive IMHO.....

I voted for the 5, but I don't really care for louvered deck lids on a hot rod. Kind of like putting an altimeter on your dash. JMTC, but it's your car so don't give a damn.

I actually like both but 7 just seems a little busy, I Voted for 5, if I had to pick.

Next big step in my 34 ford coupe build is doing something about my decklid and the plan is to take the 2 bad lids I already have and strip them to make a decent inner structure. Then my bodyman and I will roll a new skin for it and send it to my ol, local buddy, Larry for a good louvering. We'll make a shallow pan under the louvered skin to direct water down through drains.
Plan is to paint all the pieces before ***embly and then spot in the welded areas after ***embly. Finish paint will came last.

good plan. do you think the inner pan is necessary? and will there be enough room?

We welded the holes in the inner panel so no water could get into the trunk. I then painted both inner and outer panels with POR-15 to stop any rusting. Made sure there were drain holes in the bottom of the trunk lip that lined up with the drain holes in the body.

5 rows of louvers were plenty to sand!

Ok, so not to be a dumb fool here, I am sure I have missed something. Exactly what is the point of having louvers if you've welded everything up?

I won't judge on the dumb fool part, but the purpose of mine are like 99.9% of everybody else that louvers their trunk lids, I like the looks, but my wife didn't want her luggage wet if we get rained on when we go on trips.

lurker mick, car looks great! the deck lids i had to paint came ***embled and did not have all the large holes that your have. they just have one access hole and cover on the inside, which is why i had to make the nozzle on the end of the hose to get paint down inside.

Looks like a nice project Ted, like the gun adaptor. I voted for the 5 rows. Is that body perfectly balanced hanging by the top bow mounts? Bob

this one isn't, there is a chain holding about two pounds of pressure to keep it level. the strange thing is the last one i did it held it perfectly balance without the chain in the back. maybe they used thicker sheet metal some where in the back? i made the cross brace to help in keeping it square while it is hanging, keep it in mind if you need it, or the gun.
