You can call BS all you want. But I was there at that dinner that evening as a teenager, all of us witnessed a Oldsmobile pass by at a high rate of speed with several police cars from different counties and state police cars flying by later and some even going opposite direction. Not long after that a solid black cheap bodied ’57 Chevrolet pulled into dinner, smelling like it was on fire (hot oil smell), with Fuel Injection badge on front finder but no crossed flags. It also had an antenna mounted in center of trunk lid, which was clearly not a factory radio antenna. We ask the guy that got out wearing a suit, that had the obvious recognizable sign of some kind of police/detective or federal agent, what was going on. He said he was passing thru the area when he picked up on radio chatter about a guy driving an Oldsmobile that had been playing cat and mouse with many local police departments and they hadn’t been able to stop him. He said by coincidence as he was entering the rt. 17 & 134 merge an Oldsmobile shot in front of him off 134 at a high rate of speed with plate ID of what had been reported for the car. He gave chase and radioed that he was in pursuit and had the car to catch him, he said as he got to full speed he was had closed to within few car lengths and his head lights light up the Olds interior enough he could make out back of drives head. At that point he said the guy waved his hand and the Olds started pulling away, when the Olds had gotten far enough away he knew it was time to cease the chase and decided to stop for something to eat. Granted I was a teenager, but I knew cars because I had been working on them with my dad since I was a very young kid. So call BS if you wish but I knew what a 57 Chevy was and it looked to have the 150 trim on it and I was old enough to read what the chrome badge said on the front finder.
Various sources say about 1500 FI passenger cars were produced in 57..both 250 and 283 hp versions..There is a possibility that at least one car was bought as a non fleet car by the police…
A cheap bodied 150 series 1957 Chevrolet with Fuel Injection had the "Fuel Injection" words and crossed flag emblem on the rear quarter panel Not on the front fender like where 210's and Belair's had them. On the 150 series with any engine the front fender emblem just said Chevrolet.
The one thing I have learned about GM studying build sheets & Pontiac car histories is that with the right connections and phone calls, anything was possible & was built at the factory. They would even greet you & put your car on a turntable and unveil your station wagon for you if you had the RIGHT connections. For this reason, I never call BS right away on any GM combo from the ‘60s on back.
