Hey, just wondering if any Calgary hambers know of a couple good wrecking yards in the area, and a good shop to pick up some parts for a build. Im looking to get some buick finned brakes and a T5. and flathead parts. Thanks alot
I got one 94 i think 7RT off a 50 merc flathead so i need a second maybe a third...not sure if u can put three on and have the engine run well...also need some finned heads, intake and new high flow water pumps
First of all - what year/make of flathead are we talking about?? RE: 1. Does the Merc carb have FOUR bolts? If it does; there aren't much in the way of multi-carb manifolds. RE: 2. What year? Best bet is a pair of new ones. RE: 3. Unless you use 94's (or 97's) refer to #1. Also available new. RE: 4. What kind of "HIGH FLOW" water pumps are you refering to?? New pumps (or re-built) are available from several after market outfits.
Sorry about not being specific enough, the flathead is a 1950 Merc out of a Mercury 1ton truck. the carb is a 94 7RT three bolt...id like to get another 94...not sure if they have to be the same code. I was wondering...ive heard that putting three carbs on a 255 flathead is to much flow...is their a trick like not using one and just putting it on as show? As for the water pump i found one on speedway think that will probably be easiest. Thanks
Help me out here - first you come on as "Talky"; then you come back as "KillerFlathead." Am I addressing the same person?? "94's" were used for a lot of different engines. The CODE isn't as important as the venturie size. (marked on the side of the carb above the base) I have a number of "94's" available; BUT they would need to be re-built. Now here you have me confused. You say THREE CARBS but ONLY using ONE. Let's back up a bit. If this engine is STOCK; YES! THREE carbs would be too much. (you could make three work with PROGRESSIVE THROTTLE linkage) BUT, the performance would be the ****s. You would need a camshaft change to make use of the extra carburation. Even if you want the end carbs to be NON OPPERATING you still would need a three carb manifold. Then you would need an "Off Set" generator mount to move it out of the way. Killer/Talky; (who ever) without knowing what condition your engine is in; or if you plan on a FULL RE-BUILD; just bolting these parts, (manifold, HC "finned" heads) on the engine might not produce the kind of results that I sense your talking about. (or expect) If I'm wrong; just say so; you didn't provide much information. If you don't know the previous history of the engine; you COULD be throwing away money. Don't take these statements (mine) as being negative; I LOVE flatheads! BUT they can "burn a hole in your pocket" REAL FAST! Have you determined if the block is even useable? (non-repairable cracks) How worn are the cylinders? What condition are the crank journals in?? Are they worn past re-grind limits?? If your looking for INTERNAL engine parts; (bearings, gaskets, etc.) I have a small stock. As far as finding Finned Aluminum Buick brake drums; - well have you ever heard the old saying, "They are as RARE as hen's teeth!" around Calgary! If you expect to find flathead parts at any of the slavage yards around here; unless something came in within the past couple of weeks, SORRY, their already gone!! Here is a TECH thread you could read that might help a bit ... http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=23305
Thanks alot...i am both talky and killerflathead...forgot the p***word then remembered it. The engine me and my dad figure is in good shape...havent gotten a chance to take it apart as i had to leave for school not long after pulling it from the truck. THough clutch plate is brand new in it and by the looks of the spark plugs and looking through the spark plug holes it looks basically mint...got my fingers crossed. Not too worried about performance out of the flatty at first just want to get it running later when money is there i want to do it all up with a 4-71 blower and all new internals. I guess ill just run two carbs...probably easiest anyways. ****ty about the buick finned...i car at my grandmas had a set but some one stole them before i could be my hands on them...which ****s...at least i got the 9" rear end.
Nice to dream!! A blower gets expensive. A duplicate to my S.C.o.T., (similar to a 4-71) sold on E-bay a couple of months ago for $34,000.00 US !! Hope you have VERY DEEP pockets!
