Technical What's your opinion on solid state voltage regulators vs. Mechanical

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Hitchhiker, Mar 17, 2022.

  1. I've got a GM product that uses the external voltage regulator. It seems like it burns out the VR every few years... There are 2 options by AC delco. Part number C635, which is the mechanical style and D663 which is the solid state version.

Do you prefer either version? This thing is very reliable, except the charging system. Obviously the best option is a more modern alternator with internal regulator. To be honest I've tried the modern 1 wire, the later internal VR alternators...they all fail eventually and I don't care to modify the system anymore. Swapping regulators is pretty easy and I keep a spare in the truck.

What's your thoughts on the solid state vs. Mechanical regulators?

  2. Well, no experience with the GM versions but the Ford electronic regulators have been dead-nuts reliable. I'd go electronic.

All GM external regulators work but are subject to similar issues…bad grounds. The GM external has a grounding tab underneath the regulator and it is almost never used. Run a ground wire from the alternator to this tab to extend the life of the regulator.

On the F bodies I play with I use the solid state ones but I put the delco remy covers on them so they look original. I opened a drawer the other day and there were 4 or 5 stock regulators in there with no covers  I tossed them

  5. More important is who made the part and where. And not just what it says on the box.

  6. That's also true for the Ford regulators and is important for regulator life.

did you try finding a NORS regulator? (new old replacement stock). Like, something from Standard or Echlin, in an old box, that says MADE IN USA?

I have a used Echlin I pulled off a car who knows how long ago, that I put on my Chevy II 8 years ago when I built the car, and it's been working fine for 30k miles. Not much electrical load on the car, though, with point ignition and no power robbing accessories at all.

Electronic ones are better, but why would you want better on a traditional car?

  8. Probably get "yelled" at, but the 1 wire on mine has done ten years+ and over 20,000 miles. I will let you know when it fails.
    Agree with ground comments.
