Does anyone have any advice or experiences with using a private party as a car hauler? A guy I was introduced to by a family member (no real history btw) is offering to make the haul from Nevada to Oregon with my car on his trailer. I've spoken to him over the phone and he's a fellow car guy for sure, but that's about all I know. For sure I'm hesitant to hand the keys of my cl***ic over to some stranger but if there was a way to ensure he's a legit guy or some kind insurance policy, it might save me some dough on the move.

  2. Insurance ? Bonded ?

I picked up my merc with my buddies truck and my work trailer about a 8 hour round trip .

couple squirrelly moments with the car on the trailer headed home .
Lots of stupid people that can’t drive .

I was exhausted when I finally got home that night .

the $650 I got quoted would have been well worth not going through that head ache .

What would **** is IF something happens , are you out your car ?
Will you get an “ oops sorry “
Or will he pay out of pocket ? Insurance ? Etc ?

  4. you have how much money in your "cl***ic car" spend the money on a reputable hauler. it might take time to get a few quotes. be confident and comfortable with who is hauling your car.

I used David Phelps. He was quick, INSURED, BONDED, had an enclosed trailer and called every morning to tell me the status of the move. I had his name, phone number, everything. I don't take chances with my cars.

This is why everybody should own a Tesla. If you need to send the car somewhere, you just:
1 Upload the destination in the on-board computer.
2 While standing outside of the car, put it in gear.
3 As the car rolls down the driveway, slam the driver's door shut.
4 Go back to drinking coffee.
At least, that's what some people think.

This is what I'm afraid of. Its not an insanely valuable car and I have my own insurance coverage. Just one option I'm exploring in a world of $5 gallon gas. Couldn't have picked a better time to make this happen... Doh!!

Does the guy do this for a living or is he “just heading that way”?

If you have the vehicle already insured, the insurance coverage that you have will likely cover you if you are hauling your car.

If you have the vehicle already insured, the insurance coverage that you have will likely cover you if your car club buddy is hauling your car as a favor and not charging you.

If you have the vehicle already insured, the insurance coverage WILL NOT cover you if your car is being hauled by a For Hire carrier whose service you are paying for.

When you ask ANY car hauler about insurance, make sure they have adequate insurance to cover what they are carrying, not just insurance on their truck or trailer. It's not the same although I have seen some private carriers try to convince that it is. IT'S NOT.

The reputable larger carriers such as P***port, Reliable, Intercity, etc have the amount of coverage in each and every contract/agreement/price quote they provide to their customers. This insurance coverage is included in the shipping quote and is neither optional or additional.

Accidents happen. Make sure you aren't the one who pays.

    Solid insight GZ. Thanks.
And no, not his daily gig transporting cars. I don't want to end up getting F'd. Things do happen, even if its not intentional.

Just for perspective, may or may not pertain? I have a flatbed trailer and a horse trailer. I pay a few bucks more a year for contents, whether it be a couch or an animal.
My agent did tell me if I used either for someone else, contents were not covered.

I'll second Bill's Transport, he delivered my 40 Willys, great guy, very honest, and stays in contact, letting you know where he is and when he will deliver. He's a car guy too, so he knows how to treat your car.

  18. Go ahead and use him.

You should have your car insured already.

    I carry 100K insurance and I am
the only one hauling on the HAMB
that carries insurance ( as far as I know ).

That is because I am an actual business
with a website in operation since 2006.

I have been HAMB Alliance Member
    since I joined in 2008.

He comes recommended - right ?

Unless you are getting red flags from
talking with him - everything will probably
    go smoothly.

You will find it difficult to find someone
who actually transports available for that
trip - I posted availability to transport
recently from Phoenix, AZ to Seattle, WA
to help out a customer cover the unloaded
miles to go pick up this 1956 rare convertible

    5760EF77-943C-4812-9D91-881860B13708.jpeg

    I had no takers.

So began my longest single vehicle mileage
transport covering 5400 miles from Arizona
    to Washington to Florida.

I picked up this 1930 Chevy along the way
that was on my schedule - it gets dropped
    off Monday in Ohio.

I just booked another Bug from Ohio
down to Florida so now I have a full load.

Then I pick up two Model A’s in
    Lakeland, Florida and take
    them up to Memphis, Tennessee.

There is a site that grades car haulers, I forget what it is called. If your driver is not on the list, I'd be hesitant to use him.

I'll go x3 with a recommendation for Bill's Auto Works. You won't find better recommendations here on the HAMB-do a search. There are set costs for that haul-fuel, equipment, time, tires, etc. So ask yourself-if the price is a lot lower, what's not being included. Same if it's way higher-better find out why. What doesn't have a price-and can't be bought-is integrity. Please re-read the first sentence of this post.

I'm guessing that's to cover the cars-but still maybe questionable. If I was a professional hauler, which I am not, I'd carry >$1 million in liability.
One reason I use the insurance carriers that I do for my dailies and my collectibles is that I can stack the coverages and end up with more than that. Actually 110/300 on each car=$1.2 million liability

  23. Still Questionable ?

You - questioning my insurance coverage …
While you sing the praises of someone
    who has no insurance ?

I don’t think anyone is questioning your insurance but since you brought up you have 100k insurance, how does that work if all the vehicles you are hauling get damaged in an accident? I think that’s why it was asked “is it enough”.
Say (god forbid) your trailer rolls over and all vehicles are a loss. Is it 100k per vehicle or total load?

Fellas - lets leave the competing Haulers comments off the HAMB.
The bomb throwing has been going on for years and it's time it stopped.
    Enough is enough.
Let it go....... please and thank you.

Both guys are here to perform a service.

    Thank you.
