I've been gathering alot of **** for my Model A, but before I get it all done and forget to put in a gas tank, I huess I better find out what you guys are using. My Cowl/Tank is in perfect shape, but I don't much like the idea of having gasoline stored 2 feet from my face, behind a hopped up V8, so I'm going to gut the tank and use only the cowl, so I'll gain more room in the channeled a-bone. At first I thought I'd use a "behind-the-seat" type gas tank found in early trucks. My brother's '66 C-10 Chevy now sports a fuel cell bewteen the the rails and his old tank is in great shape. I figured I'd mount it exactly how they are in the trucks, but in my sedan, just under the mailslot rear window. I guess I'd have to cut the body and mold in a fuel filler & access door, unless there's an alternative. Remember, I don't want to spend much money, or too much time fabricating a location and mount, and I don't want it to look tacky. Hell I'm fine with ziptieing my 5-gallon red plastic tank to the frame next to the motor...whatever. Tell me what you've done, what you would do, what you're wearing, what fuel pump setup I should use (Mech or Electric/Inline or In-Tank). Help. Thanks bros...
I used an early Falcon/Mustang tank in my A sedan. They are very flat, and are actually the trunk floor in those cars. I mounted it by building a framework out of angle iron and bolting the tank to it. I sheeted it with plywood, and carpeted that. I had room to mount a rear seat on top of it, but my car isn't channeled. The dimensions were roughly 40x25x7deep.
I used the stock tank in my A, behind a Boss 302 (never should have let that motor go). Ran the car for about ten years. Never had any trouble with the tank (or the Boss)
It's about a 15 gallon tank. I ran the filler out the side under the rear quarter window. I know it's not trad, but I installed a filler door from an 80's Jeep Cherokee between the quarter gl*** and the right rear fender
"Hell I'm fine with ziptieing my 5-gallon red plastic tank to the frame next to the motor" The stock tank is fine then.
As a kid I went all over the country in a model A with the stock tank. never any problems. If your afraid to have it in front of you then whats the difference if its right behind your seat?
The stock position is probably the safest place for a steel tank in a Model A. Fuels cells, boat tanks, etc are another matter but finding an unobtrusive place for one in a sedan or truck is tricky. If you don't need to recess the firewall then I recommend the genny tank. From direct experience they are relatively trouble free.
Exactly what I was thinkin'. My '72 Ford pickup has the tank behind the seat and I feel comfortable with that. One way ya' get fried from the front and the other ya' get fried from the back. What's the diff??
Not sure how much room you'll have behind the rear seat, but I used a Tanks universal tank in the trunk of my Model A. Fits great-there's another thread running now (Darby's) regarding Tanks and where to get them. There's just no go place in an A,but I wasn't happy driving with a load of gas between a hot motor and my lap. ( I used to have a VW bus where my knees where the front bumper). Have you considered saddle tanks for your A? I've run across a couple of used sets here and there that weren't too expensive. And, of course, there are some who mount a tank out back like a '32-can't recall if I've seen this in anything other than a coupe. Finally, you might secretly investigate your state DMV regs on where you can put a tank. Some states are a bit picky about moving it from the stock location.
Put it under, and the gauge from the dash fitted next to the filler. http://www.directimagehost.com/is.php?i=102087&img=DSC02460.JPG
