When did the Mr Gasket vertigate hit the scene? I have a 55 chevy that I've been collecting parts for. I wanna build a car that would have been built in the mid 60's. I found a vertigate shifter that I can get, but I have heard that they weren't available until the early 70's. Is this true?
I have a V gate for a 5 speed from Leonard Long,,,,,,it’s on my Doug Nash . I think he started his shifter business in the late 70,s,,,,,,top quality product ! Tommy
I’d stick it in and drive . The first time I drove a vehicle with a Mr. Gasket V-Gate was my friends 55 Chevy in 1974. Getting into Reverse was a little TIME consuming. I have parts of a Mr Gasket in my 53 now. I fabricated the sticks-linkage-mounting bracket from a few parts I found at the swap meet. The Grandkids think I’m nuts. His 55 was the fastest thing on the street at that time.
I had one in my 4spd., 56 Chevy for many years. Don't recall when I bought it. Worked great. BUT...a bit rattley . I drove with one hand on the shifter, most ALL the time so it wouldn't rattle. Otherwise, I liked it. Never had any "other" problems with it. I'm not sure when it hit the shops, but...I didn't care. Mike
Had one in my Chevelle around 1975. A bungee cord around the linkage rods usually stopped the rattle...
I had one between my legs in my Logghe altered behind a Liberty 4-speed in the early '70s. I would shift it so hard I broke a shift lever. And a linkage rod heim end. Adrenalin is a funny thing. Sometimes I'd do the 1-2 shift with the front end still in the air... and hope it would still be going straight when the wheels touched down. Which it didn't always. I believe the original patent name for it was The Bieber Changer.
I thought the Bieber shifter changer was a rotary type shifter ? You shifted 1-4 up,,,,and 4-1 back down,,,,,,originally for a Muncie ? Tommy
