This bolt holds the bottom of the rear shock onto the frame. Yesterday it fell out. To me it looks like the threads were riding right on the frame. Is this the way it was designed?

Obviously this one is junk but I tries to see if I’d would fit back through the hole and it won’t. Does it get threaded into that hole?

where might I get a new one?

It probably came loose and wore the threads as it wiggled up and down till it fell off.

Threads are not supposed to be a load bearing surface.

I would guess it goes through the shock, through the shock bracket, then gets a washer and nut.

You might change thread ***le to:
    1965 Impala lower shock bolt

The lower shock mounts to a bracket on the differential, not the frame.

If that just has a rounded head, not a hex head for a wrench, then I think it is a very common generic replacement part. Take it to your local auto parts store and they should be able to match it. I think it goes from the back of the car into the shock pointing forward, then a short spacer, then into the axle, then the lock washer and nut. If it won't fit through the hole in the axle, take a round file and clean up any burrs. Don't go crazy and egg out the hole.

I’d rethread it. If your not able to find one I may have a replacement that will work.

Go and check all the bolts on your car. If this one just fell out. Other might fall out as well. Or have already fallen out as well. Maybe someone forgot to tighten it. Maybe others are bad as well. You will get to know the condition of your car going forward. And maybe a good reason to buy more tools. Good luck.

Shock studs may be available at Pep Boys Help aisle. Any place like Midas would probably give you one. They often come with shocks and are not needed and are thrown out.

they come with new shocks. I would imagine, now would be the time to replace all of it, if the bolt is worn, someone probably did a sub-par job.

With Scotty’s terminology in the post I think he’s not really technically skilled. Rethreading this bolt would seem out of his wheelhouse. But maybe he could find a replacement at NAPA.
