Hey guys, I am looking for a little help with a mysterious small block I have. It's a 283, casting number 3756519
Which is a 58 to 62 block. Ok great. Now the stamping number. I can't find anything on it. I know someone here will have it no question. But I can't find it.

    It is F09I4D.
I have added a few pictures.

    Thanks.

Flint plant built on sept 14. I found two D codes, one for 1958 and the other for 1960, both list for cars and trucks, two barrel power glide. 170 or 185 hp.

The casting date would help to narrow it down a bit, but most 283's weren't anything special.

Its complete. But it had a smog Era 4 barrel intake on it. And its painted 70s sbc blue. I'll check the bolts.

"D" is probably the most common early 283 stamping, it was used on all the boring 2bbl Powerglide 283 engines from 58 to 64.

Unless it is going in a 100% restored 58 or 62 Chevy there is absolutely no reason to break it down any further it is just a 58/62 Two Barrel Powerglide 283 and not at all exciting. It has side mount pads so you can hook it to side mounts in a hot rod if so inclined.
There is no difference in parts for it than any other 2 barrel 283.

I was asking because I was wondering if it was a vette engine. If it was I'd try to sell it. But since it's not, no I don't care. It's getting a crossram and going in my 50 gmc.

They are all Corvette engines when you put the right heads and a pair of correct for the year Corvette valve covers on them. The local Chevy dealer sold 50 sets of finned Corvette valve covers for every Corvette they sold in the finned cover days. 35 bucks a pair an another 35 bucks bought you an 098 cam off the other shelf. The parts dude kept at least three pair of valve covers and a half dozen 098 Cams on the shelf at all times in the 60's. I got in on installing some of each when I was in my teens.

58 to 62 283 is the thicker wall casting and the best one to bore to 4 inch, or so I read in the days before google

There are more ‘Corvette’ engines out there than Corvettes produced between 1958 and 1964

I bought a 56 GMC years ago, with a frozen 283 2 barrel. I pulled the crank and Rods for a guy who was restoring a 57 Vette 270 horse engine and stuck the block outside. A year later I ran the suffix code out of boredom. My parts engine was a 58 Vette 240 horse horse engine. Go figure

Do the heads match the block or the intake?

There is not a casting date on the block in the place that it was pointed out to me.
No, I just ran the heads, they come back as 75-79 262/267/305 heads. 1.72/ 1.30 60cc heads.
I'm not sure that they are an upgrade or not, but I'm going to use them.
It kinds makes sense to my thoughts. Someone had some for a smogger car that needed an engine.
They used the ****py 70s intake and cast iron exhaust manifolds. The heads confirm my su****ion, in my mind at least.

That's it. Only the "1" you can see.

Guessing that means it a 61 block.

don't put too much stock in the shape of the characters on the old date codes...but seeing all of what's there between the screws, would help.
