  4. Having the unique Hilborn 4-port injector recreated by our own Bruce Dyda...lots of whittling away, now comes the mirror-finish polishing and gold anodized butterflies then we'll recreate the flower power decals.

    Hello,

    Frank Cannon did a lot of things in drag racing. The team of Chrisman/Cannon was at the top echelon for many years in competition. The photo wording says 1st zoomies, but the term zoomies came from Chet Herbert many years before the AA/FD racers. (Circa 1964) There was an early thread about the term Zoomies.


    "...Now a twist. I recently saw an article that Chet Herbert is said to be the original creator of zoomies. He designed and built a pair for his car but didn't like them and removed them from his car. Gilmore picked up on the idea and made them popular and is widely regarded as the inventor."

    Are you referring to Lefty Mudersbach/Chet Herbert collaboration of the twin SBC dragster?

    This twin SBC motor FED was a winner from the first day it arrived at Lion’s Dragstrip. It drew the attention of racers and the whole spectator section on every run. There were a few, if any, twin SBC dragsters and this particular one was a winning combination from the beginning.

    We were all amazed when it fired up during the push starts and the power it generated was pretty outstanding. This twin SBC motor was close to home for us as we had just started the 1940 Willys build with the 6 Stromberg SBC 283 motor. That single motor was pretty powerful. But in seeing two SBC motors in a dragster was pretty outstanding.

    We thought it was powerful in the straight line runs, but one time it surprised all in attendance with a “wheelie” from the starting line. That was totally impressive. It was one of the rare moments in the history of the twin SBC dragster with what everyone was calling the headers “upswept pipes.”

    As much as the terms for drag racing or even hot rodding get picked up and used regularly, thinking it is the time when that was the start of something, the term zoomies did have its start in 1959-60. For 1964 for the 1964 and later AA/FD era, zoomies were the big thing when they were allowed back into the drag racing game.
    upload_2022-4-9_10-26-43.png But, it was still very exciting to watch and listen to those top racers make the record setting runs. Upswept headers or "zoomies" in their early stages.

    was in motion...these tangled remains of a '34 coupe appeared in Hot Rod, around '57, I think, to demonstrate safety (?) That roll bar would never pass inspection now, but back then Hot Rod hailed it as a good example.

  17. This is the Danbury Modifiers club dragster. It was later restored by Bob Swanson, and later sold to the same person that owned Ron Abbot's "Hellzapoppin" dragster, which IIRC was previously owned by Bob Long.
