I bought one of those VW style steering stabilizers to put on my car. One end I plan on hooking to the wishbone, question is, where does the other end hook? On the cross steer rod from the box to the spindle, or on the tie rod to both wheels? Or does it matter?

on our '41 ford I installed one with one end on the axle and other on the drag link. I used one from an older Econoline van. worked great.

Tie rod or drag ling. Some 4x4 guys have one on both!

  4. Between the tie rod and axle seems the most common location.

The few I have done have been to the tie rod.

Agree, from the wishbone to the tie rod.

    from speedway motors info…..
    • One end fastens to a steering tie rod or drag link and the other fastens to a suspension such as your radius rods

Still waiting on some hardware from McMaster-Carr. One piece came in last Wed, still haven't seen the rest. Not like them, usually get stuff from them in a couple of days at most. Shipped from two different warehouses, that might be why, or UPS may have lost them. If they don't show up by Monday I'll have to give them a call....

Normally I mount them to the drag link and the hair pin. On my deuce pu with side steer I mounted it from the tie rod to the wishbone. On my 40 coupe I went from the front axle to the tie rod. They have all worked good.

Walked through the living room last night, a small box caught my eye.....

Carried it into the kitchen where the wife was sitting, asked her when it came? She didn't remember, didn't remember putting it where I found it, maybe UPS is making in house delivery now, LOL ! It was the hardware I've been waiting on all week, been right under my nose and I hadn't noticed it. Grandson may have picked it up off the front porch and brought it in, who knows. It wasn't in the normal area we put incoming packages, so it went unnoticed.

Maybe I can get it stuck on one day this week.

  15. I make a bracket when I do my cars. I also heat and straighten the end. That would depend on you front end setup. DAMPER 008.JPG IMG_7527.JPG

Why are you putting one of those on your car?

My guess is the Death Wobble.

Well, that was my guess, too. You should only put a steering stabilizer on AFTER you fix the “ death wobble “! It should only be an insurance item not a fix!

I have heard folks say that, but the brand new Ford F250’s still have this issue, so that’s not really accurate. Ford is still fighting this 90 years later. I’m sure they have a lot more knowledgeable folks working on the issue, because it’s become a technical service bulletin.

I have the same issue on my 35, and everything was brand new and within spec. So, a new steering stabilizer is on the list for mine.

The wobble has been with us since the first cave man stuck a stick through two wheels…..well maybe almost that long!
It is just the way of straight axles, but with adjustment and making sure everything is tight and right it will go away. Sometimes you have to change the castor for a specific vehile a little more or less, but it will go away.
I have “ fixed “ many straight axle wobble problems this way. If your straight axle is prone to the wobble the stabilizer won’t stop it. I have seen many with the stabilizer and still do the wobble.
My suggestion and it is just a suggestion, fix the problem , then add the stabilizer for insurance, just in case !

I like that bracket CT. I have a piece of 1/4” aluminum angle and a square u bolt for the wishbone side, and a 1/4” flat aluminum plate with two rubber covered u bolts for the tie Rod end.

I don’t have the death wobble, just a little bit of wander. Tie rods and kingpins are tight, so I think it might just be following the low spots in the road. It’s not bad, just enough to be annoying. I’ve still got to check the toe, too. It’s always had the wander, but the original manual steering box had close to a half a round of play, so it was hard to tell where it was coming from. The power Saginaw box steers real light, two fingers light, so you really notice having to correct it all the time. I don’t expect the shock to eliminate it, just slow it down a bit.

Model A with dropped axle and split radius rods.

Did my mounts a little different, didn't care for the tie rod clamp, thought it would wear easily so carved a clamp for the tie rod to mount a Heim style end. Allows end to pivot easily, only had to take the slight bend out of the stabalizer, otherwise stock VW bug. Other end mounted to a bracket welded to split wishbone as a combination mount for a panhard bar.

Worked great and easily replaced if required. Only regret is should have bought unit from local parts store, not as a kit, scrapped all parts except stabalizer.

That's why I bought mine from Rock Auto instead of buying the kit. I might have been able to use one of the brackets, but would have still had to make the other one. My brackets won't be as pretty as some of Ya'll's, but will be unseen anyway. You'd have to crawl under the car to see them.
