More appropriate question may be how did you hide the rumble of an L88 camshaft? Most people I knew would be curious about the lope of either the first or second series L88 cam shaft. I have a first series camshaft new on my shelf. I bought it since it has a pretty wicked sound (and is quite hard to disguise). They don't not work well with automatics as I seem to remember and keeping the idle from falling flat may require one to turn up the idle even more which seems to be the opposite of stealth. Most street racers I knew may raise their eyebrows if an L88 pulled up next to them.

I'm sure Joe had plenty of tricks in the converter and trans internals but............
L-88 and Powerglide should not be used in the same sentence!

Reviewing post #9705, I find the rear tires kinda' wimpy to bear the brunt of an L88. The standard exhaust tips and what appears to be standard muffler seen in that photo are gonna be restrictive for a fire breathing sleeper engine. I call B.S.

Doug in 68 we ran an L88 in the 57 Vette we raced with a turbo 400 and in 69 with a clutch turbo-it could be done and was done. The 57 we ran in B/G was a full strip car with enderle injcction and so it really did not have any manners anyways. As I remember ordering the L88 in a Corvette in 67-69 required one to order the M22. I could imagine you could order a turbo 400 but I am not sure Chevrolet wanted to service such a rough idling engine with an automatic from the factory. Street manners and L88 were not often used in the same sentence. Of course anyone could run an L88 any way they wanted, even with a powerglide but the sound of an L88 was the opposite of stealth in my neighborhood.

Vette guys are a tough crowd to run with... They are either the Gold Chain Geriatric group that thinks any corvette worth its salt should be a trailer queen that has been inspected by their NCRS group, or its a turd. Then you have the Racer group that believes they should all have Blowers, slicks, turbos, nitrous systems, or you belong to the show crowd. I am a TWEENER that tries to keep things era correct for look and feel, but will have POSSIBLY something newer then 1965, on or in my cars that has the race car power with out all the unsightly things of a race car. Street racers dont show up with a car that sounds like a sewing machine, nor do they explain they are running an (off topic) engine package. Never lift the hood and always get a race with a 5-10 mph roll with street tires.

    With ya Jim.
I've commented before about GM not entertaining combining an automatic even behind the L79 327's so an L88.........
I too chose a turbo 400 when I built my (highly OT) race car in about 1977.
Don't remember when the aftermarket first started making parts, converters, cases, etc to stand up to where they are today but I recall shaking my head the first time I heard of a racing "glide", at least outside of Stock and Super Stock.

Doug, I remember when I was at the Glenmoor Gathering in Ohio about ten years ago and there was a blue 68 Camaro that won an award and drove up to receive the award. I waited for him to return to see what camshaft he had in it since it sounded just perfect and pretty wicked IMO. He told me he has a stock L88 in the car with the first series camshaft. As soon as I got home I did a search and bought one new in the box. It had been a number of years since I heard one up close and forgot how great they sounded. I was thinking about putting it in my red car but since I have a turbo 400 in the car (I regret that decision to an extent now) I decided against it. I have a Booth Arons 461 with probably a General Kinetics cam but I want the engine to be a bit more streetable so may make a few changes. If I go with a four speed I may use that L88 camshaft. As I keep looking at my date of birth on my driver's license I am not sure how long I will be able to kick the clutch anyways-sadly. I will be lucky to have that engine in my 60 Vette before I turn 75 anyways.

The point I was making earlier is that the racers in my neighborhood (Woodward and Telegraph) would never be fooled into thinking a even a so-called sleeper with a L88 was stealth. If someone was to tell me they used a 427/390 with some headwork I may believe it more since that does not have a really lumpy camshaft. My neighbor that lived kitty corner to me had a 65 Biscayne four door with a 396/425 (from the factory mind you) and that had the sleeper look but most guys could hear the rumble and knew he would be a handful. He was a diehard drag racer who had driven a Super Stock Pontiac for a number of years and thought "his sleeper" would be cool-I liked it.

And don’t forget chopping a big hole in the front crossmember to
    Clear the L88 damper pulley

Just in case any of you guys are interested, here is a thread by hipojoe that I
think is a pretty good read, and may shed some light on hipojoe's past history.

I just read the hipojoe's thread again (I listed it below), and I think that most
anyone who reads it will really enjoy it. It's 4 pages of great history.
    ..thx, Lanny

They are from the 60s. I tracked down Richard "Mac" McKinstry who took the pics and talked to him. Great guy. I believe he told me this car belonged to a friend. He also was involved in a wreck with a 58 Vette where he was the passenger and was thrown. I believe he told me no injuries but he was a bit dazed after he was thrown and looked at the mess. Good fun talking to him.

Not sure that woodgrain was the wisest decision but I still like the car. Always been a fan of the Super Duty style scoops. Here is the same car with a much better look. I am a huge fan of black with silver coves. macs cars Picture 105.jpg
