My 58 chevy is painted with ppg dp90 ,which is a joke.It is a gray looking color now.If I don't sell it soon ,I'm going to repaint it.What is the best semi gloss black paint that doesn't turn cloudy or gray .Please need help....Thanks
PCL (Pacific Coast Lacquer) Just came out with a flat black polyurethane. It has UV protection and won't turn to shit like DP does. It's easy to apply too. The kit (Paint and hardener) is about $150. They say it will stand up to washing and the weather just like any shiney paint. Hope this helps.
I use John Deer blitz black,it works allright. Now I use a single stage from omni that has been flattned,It works better. You could allways use a BC/CC system and flatten the clear, but if your gonna do that, why not paint it shiny?....JMO....hope it helps. EVIL
Wazzup Killer-D.... My Fleetline that you striped was done on Dupont Hot Rod Black. I don't like that stuff. #1 way to expensive. #2 Way to shiny. Tried their clear with a flattener to tone the shine down..... That really sucked. I have a fortune in something that was suppose to be simple and now looks like crap.
man i painted a truck 3 years ago in john deere blitz black it still looks the same see its an industral paint for tractors and its single stage use their thinner and read the can,it works best that way.it lasts and its easy to spray it only costs about 30 dollars total real cheap but real tough hope that helps.
I did my son's truck in a Tractor Supply clone to JD Blitz black. It wsa a hurry job 3 years ago to get his senior pics taken and has weathered great outside. It was really cheap. Even shot it with Naptha for a faster dry because he flamed it the next day.The only bleed thru was from a sharpie he used to layout the flames! Ya learn.
G.M. has a product called chassis black, everythings in it pour in the gun and shoot. My roadster was painted with it bout 3 years ago and still looks good. I think it's about $60 a gallon. Gary
I'm going to use Kustom Shop's Hot Rod Flatz. http://www.kustomshop.com/scripts/depot.exe?pgm=ksflatz.bbx A few guys here on the HAMB have used it, and I've seen it in person on a friends shoebox and it looks great. From what I hear too, its easy to shoot. I've got DP90 on my 53 and yeah, it sucks. Mine's grey now and chalky. Can't wash it for shit either. I'm gonna spray my truck first, then the 53 both with Hot Rod Flatz. Check em out, they've got some cool colors and they've got a ton of flat metallics too.
No problem. DetroitBuilt50 on here did his shoebox in it, its fucking awesome. As soon as I saw it, I grilled him on what he used, and the flat black is what I'm going to paint my truck with. My 53 Chevy bel aire is DP90 right now and it sucks ass. I've got to do some body work on it and I'm using Hot Rod Flatz on that too. I'm still debating the color on the 53 though. I'm leaning towards the blue or orange.
I have Blitz Black on my 57 ranch wagon, and like it. It was cheap and went on great. I do think I like what I've seen of the Flatz black better, tho, and may do quick and dirty over the blitz black with it.
Blitz Black is the only way to go. Sealed impliment paint! Can't get any tougher than that. And something I enjoy is even after 8 months now, I can still rattle can blitz to the truck in spots and it blends right in. $8.00 a quart or $26.00 a gallon. I used 2 quarts on my truck. monkey
I've got a dp90 finish chalking as well. Can I prep it and paint over it? How do you prep a chalky surface and get any kind of adhesion?
Tape off everything. Make sure paint surface is clean first. Start sanding. Work you way down from 150-900 or 1000. Once you are completely sanded, wash it with water again. Blow it all off good and get all the extra dust gone. Make sure entire surface is sanded, clean and smooth. Then run a tack rag over the whole thing. Once that is done, mix your paint and start spraying. ps You don't have to take all your DP-90 off. Just scuff it really good to give the new paint something to bite to. If it's chalking, it's already half way there anyway. monkey
Here's a question? Can you paint over the Blitz Black. Like when I eventually want to go shiny. I've heard it's straight enamel. What problems might you encounter covering it with a urethane?
can't you just add a flattening agent to the gloss black? You still get the protection of the gloss from moisture getting under the paint and the semi-gloss or satin gloss for easy washing don't you?? Plus there would'nt be any fade right??or am I full of shit?
Personally I like Rustoleum "Satin" black. You can get it in quarts for around $7.50 (needed 2 for my car) at Home Depot and just need to thin a little. Painted the whole car for $50 and it's lasted for years. It's made for outdoor metal furniture so it seems to hold up pretty well and it's easy to touch up as they also sell it in spray cans. I've heard that some even roll it on (don't flame me, I've never tried it) with the "tight" foam rollers.
I'll have to check into painting over blitz black. Haven't ever heard of not being able to paint over it but I've seen weirder shit happen. I'll find out. monkey
