What needs to be done to convert an ordinary Holley 94 carb. into a power (secondary) carb. for multiple carb. setup? Remove choke, ok, then metering system? Seat idle screws?
I ran these six 94s for over a decade. 2 rows of three carbs, both rows progressive into an open plenum. 2 primary carbs and 4 secondary carbs. The secondary carbs had closed idle screws with the throttle plates closing as absolutely as possible and blocked off power valves. The primary cars were pretty much normal. Vacuum advance port on one of the primary cars for the distributor. It took me a while to figure out that it was helpful to lower the float levels slightly so that if the gas in the carbs would slosh it wouldn't overwhelm the engine at low rpms or at an idle.Actually learned that on the ford barn site.
This is loaded. Take a search around for links to multi setups. I put alot together about that... Shortest answer- go with strombergs. I messed with holleys for 10 years. Constant battle back and forth. I landed on .051 jets , 3.5 PVs, straight linkage and the highest hole for acce pump as the best setup that I thought was good. They ****ed at progressive and were difficult with drive-ability. When I got 4 strombergs on there it took 15 min to dial them in and then it ran like a pissed off hippopotamus on crack and idled like a Frank Sinatra tune.
I worked on my yblock 3x2's for a month until I had it running like it should. Ended up doing like Desotot for most of it. I think one of the keys to having one run right is sealing the secondary carb throttle plates so I bought a couple new secondary carb bases from Vintage Speed. I also did the distributor vacuum advance modification on Ted Eaton's site for the primary carb. Also lowered the floats and set the fuel pressure to 3psi. Was relatively trouble free after that.
Will try, hard to get a hold of him. One thing, what are the main parts that have to be identical from carb to carb. I have three "2100" units, one with a four bolt base, and one merely marked "Ford". I ***ume jets, power valves, linkage need to be the same. Any internal differences?
94s are a 940 thou throttle plates, there are 48 and older with no vacuum port, 49 and newer with a vacuum port. Some are Ford, others are Chandler Grove and the third kind is Holley. These are all more or less the same. However some have truck guts in the venturis others have the car guts. I used the car guts cause they looked like they could flow more air/fuel. I could be wrong but thats what I did. I kept all the accelerator pumps functional.I picked up about 25 carbs to make 6. I had lots of left over stuff. I used the longer truck shafts for the throttle plates so I could do the progressive tri power linkage. I got about 21 mpg on the hwy and town I got about 16 mpg if I wasn't goofing around. .That would be a SAE gallon which is about 20% bigger than a US gallon.
Stromberg or Holley, either makes sense. Now I dunno about the rest of you but I'd almost pay to a pissed off hippo sing Sinatra.
