There was an old article written by Pat Ganahl called “No bum steer”. It’s an article about the swap from a stock 36 steering box to the Saginaw 525 box. Pete and Jakes sent me a copy as a set of instructions for their adapter plate, but it looks like it was copied 300 times and the pics are almost worthless. Pat Ganahl is looking in his stash but it would help if I new what magazine it was in, year and month. I know it’s a long shot, but I figured I would try. Thanks, Root
Chris ..... I don't think this is going to be any help no-bump-steer-1.pdf (peteandjakes.com) I'm sure it's what you already have..... Glenn
Heathen posted this in 2008 I remember an article in Street Rodder by Pat Ganahl (probably 15-20 years ago) about adapting a '60s-'70s style Saginaw manual steering gear to his '48 Chevy. HEATHEN, JUL 16, 2008!REPORT! SHARE POST#5LIKE+ QUOTEREPLY
Street Rodder July 1998 had part 3 of the article .... Street Rodder Magazine Vol 27 No 7 July 1998 Avoiding Bum Steer Pt III | eBay Glenn
In the May 1975 issue of Street Rodder magazine, Pat Ganahl wrote an article titled, "Stop Bump Steer". Is this the one?
The Street Rodder article from July 1998 mentioned above, is about steering in general, written by Ron Ceridono.
LOL the dude looks like me and I even part my hair in the middle. But I don't know who he is. From the article maybe he was an employee of Pete & Jakes so maybe @Marty Strode will know him.
I am fighting a death wobble and I am starting at the box and working my way out. I wanted to make sure everything was kosher from the get go.
I think at some point I did read it? I wanted steering and adapted my box mounting it with a plate. I recall needing to modify the pitman arm but other then that, easy peezy.
When I put my ratty ol' 33 pickup together I drove over to DesMoines to Corncobcoupe house and bought a primo '39 box/column/steering wheel... I had a 40 parts chassis I robbed a steer box bracket from it and mocked it all up in the 33 chassis Had to lean the bracket back a little and weld a mounting ear to the frame or bracket. I know this thread is about adapting a GM box to the 35-36 but that 39 ford box felt like power steering......loved it!
To be clear, I have already done the swap. I have a new quick ratio box ordered and I am checking everything in the meantime. I am making sure that the plate is oriented correctly. I will beat this death wobble gremlin. I’ll start a separate thread when the parts all get here.
Had the dreaded "death wobble" happen a time or two, it really gets your attention and can be a result of almost anything, best of luck solving the problem.
