OK...so I bought a manifold off egay for my SBC. Good price, I guess, however, I started cleaning it up and getting ready to install it and guess what?.....I find a crack in the water runner in the center of the manifold. It's on the lower inside corner where the manifold meets the head. I wish I had a pic but I don't know if you could see it. The guy I bought it from gave me all kinds of **** about how I was nothing since I've only bought a couple things off egay and he claims to have sold over 2000 items. I could care less how many items he ****ed, I mean sold to people and never mind that I've been involved in the shipping business since before he was liquid...get my drift? Anyway, what would you do. I really want it to work and thought about heliarcing the crack and grinding smooth before I install it. Think that would be OK? Wouldn't you know, I found one in the junkyard the day I bid on it but none the less, "won" it on egay. The motor I'm putting in the 30 is not my build up motor, just one to get the fabrication done and get it on the road. I have another motor that I am going to trick out for the finished build. I know I'll probably never get a response from this jerk so my question is....what to do now? Do you think the weld will be OK? I hate the thought of having it on my motor but like I said, its only temporary. I'll never buy anything off egay again!
it does'nt sound like it was an obvious crack so perhaps he did'nt know about it. there is nothing at all wrong with welding it up and grinding it back down. i would'nt sweat it at all. TIG it, grind it and call it good.
don't **** on ebay because you have dealt with one bad apple. I've shipped out just over 1900 items and only had 2 problems. took care of one, the other nob negged me so I negged him back. would have given him a refund and let him keep the item if he had let me know before negging me. I have no idea what the cir***stances are here.. so I'll tell you what I would do. first, never buy anything online without using a credit card. did you pay with paypal? file an "item significantly not as described'' claim with paypal. depending on the description you should get a refund. if paypal does not find in your favor file a claim with your credit card company. if you paid by check or money order you are screwed. it is up to the seller to decide how to handle it. what was his feedback like? anything less than 100% needs to be investigated to see who you are dealing with... a seller who told you you were nothing cuz you have no feedback could not possibly have good feedback. as for the damage... weld it up and call it a day.
go with 49ratfink...a safe way to go about it. First I would contact the seller...if he tells you to pound sand...then move forward with the claim. Or TIG it and go.
Make a SNAD (significantly not as described) claim to ebay. Chances are good you'll win, and return the manifold to get your money back. There's live help chat on ebay to ask them questions, they'll guide you through the process. They'll freeze the amount you paid for the manifold in his paypal account(did you paypal?) and release it to whoever wins the dispute. This *will* get his attention, and if nothing else maybe you can negotiate a discount since you're gonna have to repair the manifold(if you can, I dunno). Good luck. EDIT: Ratfink beat me to the post Like he said, if you paid by check or MO, then your best leverage is that you can leave him neg feedback(hopefully you haven't done this already, cuz if you have, your chances of settling this without paypal involved are s-m-all) Negging someone is the *LAST* resort.
Now you know why you got a good price! It's an used manifold! Get a life, ****. Sounds like this is the first used part you ever bought at a swap meet or auction. The reason this junk goes to a swap meet, is that it isn't perfect. So weld it up, and move on with your life. If your wife was cracked would you complain here?
its already been said, but if you didn't notice the crack until you cleaned it up... what makes you think he knew about it?
I always worry about an eBay winner with 0-5 feedbacks. If you had to clean the manifold to see the crack then chances are the selled never saw it.
Theres a guy ... on eBay ... he has " a pontiac " in his eBay screen name ... He sells borderline junk and advertises it as good ... he buys other folks cast off broke, incomplete or otherwise useless stuff ( CHEAP ) at swap meets and out of the trader papers ... and then lists them as good on eBay ... when you have a problem he says " I got it used " ... On cheap items he will offer to give you your money back if you ship it back to him ... but he changes a big shipping fee to send it to you so after you send it back ( minus his shipping fee ) and the cost of you shipping it back to him ... you have nothing or almost nothing left .. on more $$$ items he says " TOO BAD " It's always someone else's fault ... according to him ...
If you paid with Paypal you can most likely get your money back. Paypal almoast always sides with the buyer. You should always ask questions before u buy though.
how did this turn into a ebay bashing thread? the answer to the question you asked is obvious save face and weld the crack, I doubt the seller saw it , I suspect you got it for a song , I would rather hear about your hot rod than ebay ......................2 cent's.......
Usually all sales final on EBAY or asis, like going to a swap, look for the swap post last week, you should of asked for more pics. All you can do is leave negative feedback, weld up your intake.
Here's my general rule of thumb on parts. if they are new then they should be in new condition and if they are used they need to be rebuilt. Weld it grind it and run it or sell it to someone who will.
man, just weld it and grind it.... accept that even u didnt see it til you cleaned it, probably a 99% chance he doesnt know its there... why does NOONE give the benifit of the doubt anymore... hell, email him, maybe he will feel bad and refund a lil money, but dont give negative feedback on something so unobvious... as an ebay seller i can tell you how much that ****S, never happened to me, but my friend got some picky ***hole that didnt like the condition of seomthing when he got it, after seeing 12 pics in the auction, and it being described even worse than it was... hard to convince people the guy is an ***hole
man , that is so true, an honest seller trys really hard to be stand up and keep ***holes from leaving a negative feedback, especially to get back at them , man that just aint right... I say if you are prone to do that stay at the salvage yard or go to summit .....
I emailed the guy and he said he would refund the money...I'm not worried about the money and no it's not the first time I've ever bought anything used. To ship it back would cost just about as much as another manifold. I didn't intend to rake the guy over the coals without giving him a chance to remedy the situation...and some of you are right, I don't think he knew it was cracked. It's a stock GM 4bbl manifold, nothing big, like I said this motor is just temporary, I've got a Covette motor that's going in it sometime in the near future. I guess the main jist of the problem relates to whether or not ya'll thing that welding it would be OK and it looks like the majority says yes, so....I'm off to a friend of mine who heliarcs to get his opinion. I had a Dodge w ***mins diesel that cracked the exhaust manifold and we had it welded about two months ago. It's already cracked again and I realize there is a big difference in the exhaust side vs. the intake side. I just don't want water in the motor. I appreciate your time and help. I hope to have the A up and running by the end of the year and I'll give you the low down as soon as possible. Thanks, again.
At***ude has a lot to do with satisfactory outcome of most any dispute. You should have limited your negative comments to the condition of the manifold rather than questioning the integrity of the seller and eBay. I have used eBay for years and have found it to be a great source for just about anything I was looking for and a good way to sell my items. I have had only a few dissapointing items, but every one was corrected or refunded after fairly showing the seller the product was not as described. There are surely some dishonest sellers, but the vast majority are made up of people as honest as any of us. Once in a while even the best seller will make a bad sale. That makes the part bad not the seller or eBay. If that manifold had turned out to be a rare piece worth much more than you paid, would you have sent the seller the cash difference? Never seek perfection in the used parts bin. Fix it or toss it.
Maybe I'm misreading what your trying to say, but there isn't any water ports in the middle of the manifold. If I understand where you are talking about, that is a heat crossover in the intake. I wouldn't really worry about it if that is where the crack is.
