Flaking the roof of a gasser

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by 63CadGuy, Apr 2, 2006.

  1. I'm thinking about flaking the roof of my '56 gasser, but I'm not sure if it would look right or period correct. My thought would be flaking it in the same color as the car, you know, gold satin paint with a gold flaked roof or red satin with a red flaked, or.... What do you think, is a flaked roof more for customs and would it look out of place on a period correct '56 chevy gasser? Let me know what you think.

I did my 53 roof in red flake and the body is white single stage. It's a great look and who gives a***** if not exactly period. It looks better than the yellow and white it was!

Some of the ole gassers had some real elaborate paint sceames. Flake, lace scallopes, cop webs. All were involed in race cars, especialy with the big money guys

  4. Thanks for the input. I was thinking the same way, but wasn't sure. Anyone else have any input on the topic?

Dig up pics of drag strip scenes in the 60's. Flake, flowers, stripes. They always had wild paint.

Look at the barn-find race cars sitting from the 60's. Flashy graphics/flake, and such, but usually not to the effort/quality of a street custom.

My 55 is getting a silver flake roof over flat dark grey.

  7. After I posted this I was thinking about a similar combo, except over a lighter gray. I'm going with red windows and need a color combo that looks good with those. Thanks for the info everyone, I'm probably going to do a flake job on the roof.

I'm with carkiller, drag cars and gasser's back then had the wildest paint jobs, seems like there were no rules. My 55 is gonna be satin black with gold flake top. Gary

Being an old******** I dont remember anyone flaking just a roof, always did the whole car , I guess if one is too lazy or only had enough bucks to do the roof well .............. who cares, go for it its your car build it for you ... and let us see it...............and we will dig it either way i GAURANTEE it

  10. That's the only thing that is nagging at me as I'm not sure if just the roofs were something that was done either. But I want my car to stand out a bit so I think I'm going to give it a shot and see what it looks like. I can always repaint it over the winter if it looks wrong. Thanks for all the input.

I absolutely hate gold, but I think the gold flake roof on a gold gasser would be killer...got some progress pics to show us?

I would flake the whole thing and do panel jobs on the sides, In fact I did one for one of my Custom Garage series, a 1959 Gasser gold with with panel, see attached images

  16. I thought about flaking the whole thing but thought it would be too much, but I like the idea of breaking it up with the panels. I also started thinking about doing some kind of old lace/flake/panel job from the 60's. I have all winter to think about it.

There is a Chili Phil inspired thread on the Los Boulevardos board about dragstrip paintjobs. I have to give credit to my buddy Harry (Rasputin) for digging up the photos.:)

I like the idea of the side panels...I might have to do that for my '40 plymouth...I wanted to keep it more of a stock color scheme, like some kid picked it up at the used car lot and dropped a hemi and a straight axle into it and went racing...but maybe I should go a little more wild...I mean I AM using the mid-60's as my cutoff point, so why not put a little style into it?...hmmm, I'll have to see if I can find someone to do some photoshop rendering for me once it's a rolling chassis...

  20. I like the pictures. I'll have to mess around with a few things in Photoshop to see if I can come up with something 60's psychedelic cool.

i love the gold leaf lettering done in the 60s.

i can hook ya up with an old school sign guy down in the cities area that does some awsome work if your interested in some lettering on the gasser.

  22. I'll look you up if I go that route, thanks.
