i have a 32 with an original 32 steering box with a 40 ford colume. my question is can i up grade the box to an f100 box without to much issue or is there a better box? its a three on the colume so am hoping not to dig in to far thnks for any help.
The F100 box will require some modifications to fit. A new mounting flange will have to be added to the box. The hole in the frame will have to be enlarged to fit the F100 box. The pitman arm is different and substantially larger. That said, the F100 box is a big improvement over the '32 box. You can still use the '40 column but the shaft length may have to be adjusted.
Speedway motors sells a tapered wedge that fits the 32 frame, and F100 box. It corrects the column angle with the stock mounting flange. The F 1 box is popular too,but you will need to make a new flange for sure if you use it. The F1 box will use your stock 32 pitman arm so thats a plus.
A friend of mine just bought this real `32 roadster that was built as a hot rod in Southern California in the late 1940's. It has the original `32 steering box with a `40 column and steering wheel, with the side shift linkage controlling a `40 transmission some how. It is extremely cool that it has survived all these decades unmolested. I would never consider changing that, just to get it to steer a little easier. This photo of it was in the book " The Birth of Hot Rodding" the story of the dry lakes era.
