Folks Of Interest Flat head Crank pin

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Grumpy Old Mechanic, May 24, 2022.

  1. All,
Rebuilding a 59A and was wondering the allowable tolerance on the crank pin journals, they say .003 on the mains and .005 on the crank pins. Are these checked per side or total? On the #2 & #7 crank pin I have .002 taper, but it reads low, high, low if it was mic up three places. Should I have the crank re-ground and go .010 under?

.002" is too much taper . Is it still round? I would highly recommend getting the crank reground.

  3. yes..

  4. Well, I have looked into the grinding process and they need $190. to grind and $250. to balance but I can buy at Dennis Carpenter for $250. and no I have not checked the shipping cost yet. May still need to keep old one and grind.

Is a "dead-on" neutral balance an absolute must for the crank on one of these engines? Or are you doing additional work on this engine that requires it to be rebalanced?

ive never heard of rebalancing a crank after grinding .010" off the rod journals. take it somewhere else. these machine shops have all that expensive equipment to pay for, so the need to sell all they can.
