Technical Harmonic damper ring slippage.

  1. How about that free spinning reluctor ring inside of a Mopar distributor that you found yet the car still miraculously ran?! Crazy, man.

In all my years @ drags ,hot rods circle track , average low budget builds , many many years on starting line , I have only seen""" 1 "" ring come off that was 30 years a go 4 speed car , I seen slip rings , Wants I reveal that ring slip or not I establish true top dead center remake if incorrect , & tune timing from,& Monitor if it still slips , if so change out . on a engine seeing no more then 6,000 rpms ,.if ring has slip on a high reaving , change out to sfi
Why do so many Rely on timing mark
( oem) & tab , there not perfect only a reference point , tune to what the engine likes .

Had a 78 GMC with a crate replacement 350 in it, heard s****ing and found the outer ring cutting into the timing cover.

Also had a Mini Cooper that slipped at about 60K, timing was read off the ring and it went into limp mode. Seemed to be a common thing with that car.

  5. i have seen this either slipped ring or completely separated a whopping 4 times in my life working on cars and stuff .

the first was on one of my cars with a FI Chevy 350 it separated completely.

the second was on a customer car , don’t remember but some mid 90’s gm FWD appliance.

and the last two in short order on forklifts with Chevy engines .

I don’t think it’s all that common , hence the “probably “ and “sometimes “ etc. slim evidence.

I’ve never looked for it, but run across it a scant few times .

although every SBC or 235 inline 6I’ve ever bought or sold has been a high nickel, 4 bolt main Corvette engine :D

Off topic, but if you have much experience with manual transmission Subaru's with the EJ25 engine you would be familiar with damper rings slipping on the hubs.

I got my first digital camera in 1998. That is 24-years of free photo processing.

Granted, it only did 640x480, and saved on a 3-1/2" floppy disk, but I have photos shot on that to this day.

I got mine in 1999, and by the time 2007 rolled around (when I took the pictures of the dampers), the resolution was high enough that you can see the timing marks, although the camera cost a few hundred bucks, and the computer to view the images cost even more. But when I had my shop working on cars 30 years ago, I never would have thought of taking pictures of broken parts, it was way too much h***le and expense.
