Great build so far brother and love how much you're doing your own fab work. Whatever we can build we build with new parts being overpriced and most times junk! Cudos on the intake fab. something about a milling machine just gets my juices flowin!! Keep pounding away. Like the 57 sittin in the shop as well. Halfway through a full build on my 56.

Hairpins and a tube axle…a little scary to me!

Just for kicks, here’s the passenger tire a good 10” off the ground with no signs of suspension bind. Between the flexibility of the hairpins with tie rod ends out back and the thin but forged bat wings on the axle, I think this is about the best case scenario for what you’re not “supposed” to do.

    Looks good to me.

  9. Love your build. But, if I look at your test, it appears the frame twist is acting as your suspension. The actual suspension seems rigid (the axle to frame distance on each side appears to remain parallel, as you would expect if it was on flat ground...might be camera angle trickery). Your right side shock doesn't appear to have compressed at all. But I'm only offering up my observation.

the shock mounts are not attached to the frame at all, just hanging off the ends of the shock.

The front rails need to be C-notched for the spring still, so the spring is bottoming out on the passenger side…but the fact remains that the drivers side tire remains on the ground. I’m probably an idiot but don’t think that makes a huge difference. I will replicate the test after the C-notching later on and see how it goes.

And I also wouldn’t call it frame twist, but maybe chassis articulation. I think a lot of folks worried about the tube axle being so rigid don’t take into account that the whole frame and body are also pivoting on the rear axle. The “math” is based on the entire frame staying perfectly level when the car has to go over a big bump. But the entire rear pivots around the top of the spring just like a factory Ford would have done. It’s a ‘28 roadster without sway bars, on narrow bias ply tires, body roll is very much expected. If you have something on coil overs out back then it’s a different story, but for this chassis it all works just fine.

Currently on hold and completely disassembled while I use the garage to put together a new daily driver…but will be back together in a couple months.

Nice I love that body style. I have a 80 SS ElCamino factory 4speed with 3.08 gear and a 410 SBC the one before that I had a 64 Red ElCamino. Looks like you and I have similar taste.

You have a thing for elco’s? Think I followed a build on another site that had the rear shortened behind the wheels on a 66 or 7.

Yup. My first car was a ‘64 El Camino. That ‘66 was a lot of fun, sold it when I moved down to Austin. This new one is going to be a little bit like that one, but untouched externally. Enough O/T talk though before Mark shuts the thread down :)

I see you gave up on the M&H’s.

  20. Not to completely derail this thread, but since they're both A bodies, what about a 64 Olds-camino? Nevermind hahaha.. carry on.

My 26T coupe is set up very similar to what you are doing. Pete Eastwood narrowed 32 frame, Superbell axle, 4 bar suspension 350-stroker(383)/350 with 8inch rear end, and dual master cylinder. Trust me, you are going to enjoy this ride!! Keep on keeping on..........

The new tan slab sided pick up looks to be a daily driver now. Lets stay on target and get the roadster done. I have all those pieces on a shelf in my shop (except deuce frame), it's out back. Not sure if I can get it down and work on it now so am really enjoying your (exceptionally) basic build. Bitchen work from the start.

yeah, backordered forever and every time I called it was two months longer. I didn’t want to just keep waiting so pulled the trigger on the towel city slicks and am pretty happy.

The “tan pickup” needs a lot of work, and it’s getting it. I’ve spoiled myself with a late model tuck for the last 5 years but it has been REALLY hard to hang onto it that long. I usually get a new daily once a year on average because I get bored. This latest effort is to have the El Camino I have always wanted, which will provide the utility I will always need, with the comfort and convenience I have become accustomed to.

So I will target that is a short period of time, then such and such will work itself out and I’ll be back on the roadster in no time…and with a new found method of how to afford putting a car together without compromise. This is an experiment that will have really long legs into my hot rod builds.

Guess you have to jack it up and down 3” about 25,000 times!

@A Boner i would assume the forged bat wings would put up with a lot more than a welded set up?

I’m also trying to imagine where you could get a an old ford to compress the front suspension 3” on a regular basses.

Wow! I’m sorry if this is arrogant but that bent portion of steel to go from bottom and top of the axle looks to be more than half as thick as I would expect using my Hillbilligy CAD program(my noggin). @A Boner.
