By now I expected to post pictures and a positive story of my new Mooneyham 8-71 blower. Instead I’ll share with you my story of frustration. The short story is that on September 24, 2021 I placed my order with Jeff Gaynor of Mooneyham blowers/Supercharger supply and was told it would be 6-8 week lead time. My CC was charged in full and I shipped him my NOS Mooneyham rear bearing plate and vintage Mooneyham front cover as these parts are no longer available. Eighteen weeks later after hearing every conceivable excuse, my blower still was not shipped so I canceled the order. The CC charge was refunded, and my front cover was returned, but my NOS Mooneyham rear bearing plate was not and when I asked him to refund the retail value he will not. Based on my interaction with him, I conclude Jeff outsources all of his production and has little or no control over the processes. His organizational skills seem to be similarly lacking and at 10 weeks suggested he was having trouble locating my order. Unless you enjoy pain I’d recommend an alternate vendor. For those who want to know in more detail how this deal played out here’s the blow by blow: 09/24/2021 Ordered an 8-71 from Jeff 951-674-0572 (Cell) 09/25/2021 Sent my front and rear M/M blower plates to Jeff for assembly 6-8 wks 09/27/2021 Confirmed via Tracking that they were delivered 11/15/2021 (8 weeks) Sent a text to Supercharger Supply at 951-674-0572. “Any news on a ship date for my 8-71”. Response “Just coming back from anodize tomorrow. Update Thursday.” 11/26/2021 Sent text “Any news on the 871? Did the rotors make it back from anodizing? Steve” but got no response. 12/03/2021 Once again I sent text “Can you give me a ballpark ship date for the 8-71. Steve” 12/03/2021 (10 weeks) Jeff called but was barely aware of the details of my order. Said my paperwork was up on the wall. Said he would bump the priority up. He has been busy on the phone and has not had enough shop time. 12/29/2021 (13 Weeks) I sent text “I need a ship date for the 8-71. Steve” 12/29/2021 Jeff Gaynor called but I was not aware until 1/2/2022 He asked me to call him at 951-207-7038. 01/03/2022 (14 Weeks) Called Jeff 951-674-0572. He said the rotors have not come back from anodizing. The lady is jacking him around. He’s going to see her on Wednesday. Has another guy that can get anodizing done in 10 days. He said he expects to ship by the 15th. 01/20/2022 (17 Weeks) Text to Jeff “ 8-71 shipped yet? ” 01/21/2022 My phone ended up in airplane mode yesterday at about 18:00 but I don’t think Jeff tried to contact me anyway. I called him today at about 13:45 and he said the guys that assemble it have been sick. He said he was going to go to California and do the machine work to strip it this weekend and then they can just assemble it. He said it would ship next week. He is just about out of excuses. I need to cancel if it’s not ready next week. 01/26/2022 (18 Weeks) Called Jeff and told him that if it doesn’t ship this week to cancel the order. 01/28/2022 Called Jeff twice today but he does not answer or call me back like he usually does. Mailbox is full. 01/29/2022 learned that Jeff refunded the purchase price to my cc on 1/26/2022. That doesn’t account for my rear plate and front cover valued at $500. 01/29/2022 sent a text to Jeff “Please send tracking information for the return of my rear plate and front cover. Thanks, Steve” 01/31/2022 sent a text to Jeff “Don’t forget I need to get the rear plate and front cover returned. Thanks, Steve” 02/01/2022 Called Jeff today but he does not answer or call me back like he usually does. Mailbox is full. 02/02/2022 Called Jeff and he actually answered. He said he would return my front cover and send a new replacement for the rear plate since it was already mated with the blower housing. Time will tell if he actually does. 02/07/2022 The Front cover arrived today: Sheri Bowers 1671 E Vista Dr. Mohave Valley, Az 86440 02/08/2022 Sent a text to Jeff “ I got the front cover back yesterday. Thank you. If I understand correctly you’re getting a replacement rear plate for me because mine was used on the 8-71.” 02/08/2022 received a test from Jeff “Yes” 02/22/2022 Sent this test to Jeff: “Find a replacement rear plate for me yet?” 02/22/2022 Got this response from Jeff:” I’m having them made” I responded: “ok thanks” 03/21/2022 Sent this test to Jeff: “Any word on the replacement rear plate. Steve” I got this response “I will try for a eta today”. To that I responded “Thanks“. 04/19/2022 Sent this test to Jeff: “Any ETA on the replacement rear plate. Steve“ No response. 04/28/2022 Sent this test to Jeff: “Any news on the replacement rear plate. Steve” No Response. 05/06/2022 Sent this test to Jeff: “I'd like to get squared away on this rear plate in my lifetime. Please let me know how you see it. Steve“ No Response. 05/08/2022 Sent this text to Jeff: “It's time for you to show you have any integrity. Either send me the replacement rear cover or a check for the retail value of the item. If I don't hear from you on this issue then I will use social media and the internet forums to help others avoid the frustration with your company that I have experienced over the last seven + months. Steve” Got this response: “I will refund retail tomorrow.” To which I responded “Thanks” 05/20/2022 (8 Mo later) Sent this test to Jeff: “What happened to the refund check you were going to send on the 9th. Steve” No Response
Talk to Gary Dyer or his son at Dyer’s. They’ll take care of you right. Not the first story I have heard about poor service from Mooneyham’s. Was way better when Gene ran the place.
My experience with Jeff was not perfect, but not horrible, The 2-4 week time frame stretched into a few months with a period where he did not return my communication, which made me a bit nervous as it was already paid for. But, wouldn't cha know it, one fine day the blower showed up and man, that sucker was NICE. Now that I have one transaction with him under my belt, I would be a little less nervous and I would understand that there is a multiple of 4 on his shipping time frame. -Abone.
Sucks what happened to you . back ordered parts , extended labour , shops busy or what have you. COMMUNICATION , COMMUNICATION , communication!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Keep the customer in the loop , reach out to them BEFORE they reach out to you. In business if you can do that you can pretty much solve any problem . one thing I learned doing what I do is communication is key to keeping customers happy with whatever hurdles I need to jump to get their job done and happy to PAY once I’m done . Hope you get your parts back or compensated for them .
I second the vote for Dyers. My experience with them was flawless. I could't even get BDS to return a call.
I had my blower done at Blower Drive Service in 2008 and have never had ant issues with it....If I remember right it was done in a week....Don't know how they are now....
Mooneyham (Gene if remember correctly) thought me years ago how to set up new / virgin blower/ superchargers, & Norma @ BDS before 1992 , All the manufactures are having issues with Materials & younger employees since the ones we have dealt with for so many years as many have retire or passed,
Dyers has been great to me. Great to deal with and if you want a top notch blower? Gary and his son Bill deliver.
I wouldn't consider anything else but Dyer's! Great people, better product! Have had a Dyer's built 6-71 30 year's and not an ounce of problem with anything. As a plus to that, they're only 45 minutes away if I decide to change anything, can just go there and pick it up.
As a guy who appreciates solid record keeping for just such reason, it goes to show, a well advertised name only takes you so far. Thanks for sharing your experience and the guys for sharing their Dyer's positive feed back.
Went thru a similar situation with a company called Cadillac High Performance when I ordered some aluminum heads ($2,700) from them. Had a new excuse every week and after about 3 months I contacted Paypal. They gave me a full refund and said they would deal with CHP. What that means, I don't know. Turns out that he had a bunch of upset customers and there was an article in a newspaper about them. They changed names (twice I think) but always at the same location. The two things I learned is that when a company appears unorganized and keeps giving you excuses..........don't deal with them. Anyone running a small business should be able to give useful answers to customers that you can rely on. If they don't, then spread the word. Second thing is I always use Paypal and pay the small fee. They have refunded my money on two different items that were over $2,000. Right now I have a $1,000 deposit (via Paypal) for an item thats supposed to be delivered in August. This doesn't help get your blower cover back, but it can help anyone sending money. Sorry you had the problem, but glad you pointed it out for others benefit.
There are a lot of top-notch blower shoppes between Fla and there. Blowers are not that complicated and very straight forward. ANY reputable shoppe will get it done correctly. I have had both good and bad from Jeff, but ONLY as a very very last resort would I go there.
It is not rocket surgery. I pulled my 6-71 off of the diesel engine that it started life on. I did the work myself, and now it is on my Hemi. I did buy some extra long feeler gauges, and a double gear puller, but after that, it was just my regular shop tools. I even did a half-way decent job of polishing it. I will improve that when the build is closer to being done.
I want to put a 6-71 on my 392 Hemi. Are you guys having blowers custom built for your cars? I'm looking at this Weiand from Summit. Any reason this would give me issues? https://www.summitracing.com/parts/wnd-7581
I just received a check for $175 from Supercharger Supply. Not exactly retail value for the rear plate but I should just be happy to be done. Steve
Op in start of thread , vintage front cover ,was the rear cover Vintage as well , if prior to 1975 ish I still think they should of compensated more then $175 even if 80s to present for frustration & time spent on this issue, Cahotrodboy , If your build is just street set up / use ,around 700 hp , just regaler 6-71-8-71 fine, even a OEM case if you can know how to convert (Diesel), that can get pricey if you don't have a stash of parts, some times cheaper to buy a complete set up. Yes there is some of us that have custom built blowers 71 , as much as 8k up just for the case ,rotors & snout only , that No intake carbs injection belt pulleys ext.
Store bought is fine. As has been mentioned, unless you have the tools, the time, and a stash of parts, homegrown can get spendy. It still might be cheaper, but buying can be easier. I'd be fine with that setup, as it is the one that does NOT have the giant logo cast into the blower housing. You should run the correct compression ratio forged pistons, and a blower specific (wide LSA) cam, though.
This Clown Jeff Gaynor , is a real PC of work steer clear and don't waste your time with him , Mooneyham , or Super charger supply , he is just destroying the Mooneyham name .....
Hello, If a name is the main thing and reliable supercharger service is primary, look no further than two of So Cal’ drag racing history businesses that have been in business for a long time. They both have lots of great stories to come out of such history and service to the industry. Littlefield Superchargers and Hampton Blowers are two mainstays in the hot rod/drag race supercharger industry. Both shops are run by the same drag racers from the 60s and 70s to this day. Don Hampton was one of the early drag racers that drove just about any race car in existence. From modified competition coupes to FED race cars. He is well known and has a cool history in So Cal drag racing competition. He even has a glass enclosed case with memorabilia about So Cal at the Lion’s Dragstrip Museum. https://www.hamptonblowers.com/superchargers1707681353713 Mert Littlefield was a close friend Long Beach teenager when he got started in automotive, which led to experience in the hot rod/drag race business. then he was well known in the funny car era of drag racing as his business grew. He is gone, now, but his shop is still run by the folks that have been with him since the business started. https://www.littlefieldblowers.com/ Jnaki If we were to build a supercharged SBC motor again, one of these shops would be finishing the supercharger for the motor. Bar none. History, reliability, experience and good customer service. Yes, they are located in So Cal, but connect all over the USA for service and shipping. While I didn't buy my Mooneyham blower from Jeff, my experience with him is totally opposite of your experience. He went in to the office while on vacation to look up the history of my blower. Then he connected me with the local expert on the blowers to look it over and tell me what it needs. The person he recommended is well regarded in the field of blowers. Not sure what to say about the experiences posted in this thread other than relieved I didn't have that experience.
