I just picked up the latest issue of Rodder's Journal. I was floored when I saw the article on Rikster. Hadn't had the chance to read it yet but the Pictures are way too kool. He Kolorized some of the legendary black-n-whites pictures that you can find on his web site. I would like to see some of the pictures be turned into Posters. Below is one of my favorite pictures. Can you imagine how kool it would be to see it in kolor? You don't have to. Go buy RJ#33 and check it out for yourself. Trust me the picture just pops!! 24 x 30 poster would be kool!! Hey Rickster any chance?? Great article guys and congrats to Rikster. Happy Trails, Mick
That was an awesome piece. The attention to detail is insane, and the historical accuracy just makes it that much better. Especially cool to see Johnston's shoebox in both forms. Awesome piece. I actually run a large-format printer at my sign shop and would be able to reproduce any of those images at poster size (I can print up to 5' x unlimited length)...if Rikster wants to get together on some printing, I'd be more than happy to help. I know I'd love to have that shot from the Thrifty's parking lot hanging on my garage wall! Curt
Rik did do a very nice job with those photographs. The colorizing makes me feel more connected to the time in which they were taken. I may turn out to be a fool for asking this because it might be obvious, but does anyone know who's car this is, the one right next to Litton's Ford?
From where I sit at my keyboard ... there is not a throw-back or DUD ... in the entire photo ... My TRJ #33 came today ... and I have not got much done today ... because of looking at TRJ #33 ...
Yes! To me, it had a fabulous chop but lacked in grace with it's stance. Still an awesome custom. Those coloured pics are priceless. Sam Barris's 40 merc custom looks killer! Thank You Rikster for doing this and the Rodders Journal for publishing them. Rikster did those photos justice, not like those hacked up b/w movies and/or photos you see. Ken
Just looking over the pictures makes me want to get of my *** and get outside and cut and weld on my merc!!!!Strange though....i look at my treadmill.... and it doesn`t make me want to do anything!!!
Ah, yes, thanks guys. Had I read the article closer I would have realized it sooner. The reason that I didn't recognize it right off is because you can't see the too high stance because it's behind Litton's car. I agree, the chop is cool but the stance is all wrong. Photo from Riksters album.
Hello guy's, glad you liked the Kolorized Kustoms article. I have been working long and hard on those Kolorized Images. Friday April the first I came back from a short holiday and later that day the mailman delivered my copy of the Rodders Journal issue #33. I had heard for several weeks that my article had been used but untill then I had not seen it. WOW I was so proud, when I opened the magazine! The parking lot show photo has been a favorite photo of me ever since I saw it in an early 90's Rod & Custom magazine. When I had done a few Kolorized Kustom Car Photo's and got in contact with TRJ and they liked the idear of doing an article, and offered me to suply some more original black and white photo's I emediately thought about doing a Kolorized version of that parking lot photo. I knew it would be hard to do since there where so many cars in one photo, but I asked it anyway. And sure enough they Greg Shapr had the original black and white photo and I could work on a perfect high res scan of this image... what a pleasure to do, to see this all time favourite black and white photo slowely turn into a color photo. It took me almost a month to Kolorize, at one point the photoshop file had so many layers I had to split it up in two sections to make it workable... but it was all worth it. Sam Barris his 1940 Merc and the Barris version of the Bettancourt mercury where a lot of fun as well.. So great to be able to work on these photo's in a large format, to see all the detail up close on these great custom cars. Things you dont see on the Barris version of the Bettancourt Merc are all the dust particles I had to remove before I started Kolorizing them, which took me about a day of work alone... Greg Sharp helped me a lot with the colors on some of the cars I was not sure about. He had some contacts including Larry Watson and Junior Conway to confirm the colors I had used and asked me to make a few changes on some. So most of the colors used on the customs in the photo's are as accurate as possible. I have made several more Kolorized Kustom photo's which did not make this article, hopefully they can be used at a later stage, or perhaps come available as photo prints. I do have some plans for those, but cannot go into specifics on that at this point. As for the Jack Nethercutt Olds photo that Loogy showed. That is of a later version of the car. That particular photo was taken in 1956 or later and was after the car had been in a car wreck and had been completely repainted.
