Technical Gravity feed fuel tank

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by wood remover, Jun 12, 2022.

  1. My 27 T Touring car has a v8 60hp motor, with original fuel pump and 81 stromberg carb , I would have thought the gravity fed fuel would not get past the fuel pump or the carb , but I guess I thought wrong . If I forget to turn off the fuel at the tank ,the fuel tank will empty itself into the crankcase. Any one have a good solution to this dilemma other than a better memory !!!
Been searching for a 12v fuel shut off sole noid ,but confusing on what to get . Most seem to be not recommended to be powered for more than 30 mins at a time .
Any good recommendations out there ??? 20190805_111004.jpg

Search for continuous duty solenoids, we used those on my dads transfers to run the starters to move the box in and out

I just mention these weee just for electrical though, I/e not a fluid valve.

put a note on the door so you'll see it every time you get in and out of the car.... "FUEL SHUTOFF"

you'll need to remember to open the valve again, or you won't get far.

Back a few years when propane was the 'thing', dual fuel set ups used fuel shut off solenoids to close off the tank not being used.
The two solenoids looked similar, but I have no idea if these interchanged.

  5. This might be REALLY stupid. What about running the fuel line down from the valve, back up above the valve, back down a little below the pump and back up to the pump. If the loop going up is high enough (has to be above full tank) the head pressure won't over come it.......but I'm not sure if it will stop flowing since the fuel pump created a siphon already?

Here's a stupid paint drawing......feel free to flame me.

As long as the Head is higher than the final outlet it will syphon.

    @wood remover Try this
    https://rvpart***press.com/product/multi-fuel-shut-off-valve-12-volt-afc111/

If that is too difficult , you can use a Pollak 3-port fuel selector valve and block off 1 port
These are also used on twin fuel tank Chevy trucks without a return line [also AC Delco]

Many motorcycles use a vacuum controlled valve between tank and carb(s), intake vacuum opens it when engine starts and closes when it turns off. Some have a byp*** position, to let you start it easy even if the carbs are empty.

That is what I am looking for ,something to close the fuel supply when ignition is turned off. Most I have seen only have a 30min. Run time or stand the chance of burning it out.

  10. Really dont wish to move the tank under the car

  11. This is what I have now ,thought it may solve my problem ,but it dont .

  12. Not quite the fix I was looking for squirrel !!!
I could walk around to the front of the car and forget what I was there for !!!

I know it's not the fix you're looking for, but having lived with a 27 T for a little while, I know what you're dealing with....it might be that all you need is a trigger to remind you as you enter and leave the car, that the fuel valve needs attention.

also I'm a fan of "keep it simple"

  14. Also a fan of keep it simple !!! That's why I am looking for a solenoid and not moving the tank !!
Gotta wonder how much fuel is being drawn into the engine every time the car is turned off

That motorcycle vacuum pet**** seems like a great solution.

To drive a car of that vintage shows one what it really means to drive a car. Maybe instead of a solenoid a more traditional approach would be a chauffeur.

That's why a lot of cars back then had updraft carbs to keep the engine from filling with fuel due to gravity fuel flow and owners forgetting to shut off the fuel when shutting the car off...

Engineers thought of everything. Today they engineer to much into cars and people are getting dumber.

  20. The needle and seat are adjustable from inside the car on a model T and required to be seated when not running . Helps stop the flow of gas ,but still a shut off valve at the carburator .Like squirrel said , the fuel will just run out the throat of the carb and puddle on the ground .

  21. Try using a 70's GM truck dual tank switch solenoid. Dead head one feed ****** and make sure you switch to it when you shut down. You could actually use a relay to do that for you when you turn the Key. Use the other ****** for feed when the key is on.

  23. There are fuel shut offs on equipment that open with 12 volts and close when no power is sent to them .

you can also find these kind of valves on RV’s and stuff

Not incredibly popular on forklifts and this is the first one I found , it’s back ordered with no ETA. But I can keep looking if you like . 13DDAAA5-FB4E-4D9A-B21F-9FC28C78F938.jpeg

  28. There’s a kubota dealer on hwy 5 and brock rd in flsmborow that’s been helpful to me in the past when I’ve needed stuff
    You can try them

Any equipment that’s duel fuel gas / propane will have a fuel lock off

  29. Put in a manual valve with a push-pull cable mounted in or under the dash to operate it. It'll just look like a choke cable BUT you gotta remember to use it!!! You could use one of those "Remove before takeoff" aviation clip/ribbons on it!
