Well here we go, I put the battery in, checked the oil, filled the fuel bowl thru the vent & then that's where the video starts

 

After warm up, I opened the choke & gave it a couple shots...I still can't believe how these ol' flatheads idle, gotta love it.

 

Yesterday was one of the first decent days we had in my area, which obviously required a trip to get Snoopy & drive him 45 minutes home for the summer, had to stop at the beach for a picture

Grease, Oil, Fluid Check, Adjust Brakes & then Wash / Clean Up was the order of the day today !

 

One task I ignored when going thru Snoopy was the shocks, they had some form of resistance to them at the time & it was an easy enough task to deal with at a later date, recently when driving on the highway in very windy conditions it became evident that I might want to rule out defective shocks ... After some detective work it appears the fronts are off a 1950 Dodge Car - (Originally Front Application) & the rears are off a 1957 Ford Car - (Originally Front Application) because the fronts are a 5/8 bore top & bottom but the bottom mount on axle is a 1/2" bolt they shoved some homemade red plastic bushing to make up the difference, on the rear the lower shock connection was a cross pin that must have been cut off & driven out & then mounted using a 1/2" bolt to connect to rear axle. I'll confirm some measurements this evening & then get replacements ordered.

 

Most hardware stores will sell steel sleeves that are 1.5" long with a .5 ID and an .625 OD. That's what I'm using on the top of my rear shocks. My car uses your 50 Dodge ones front and rear. Seems like the easiest way to deal with your rubber shim situation.

 

If you want to use the 57 Ford ones this bushing might work to replace the lower one with the pin.

Then you could use the same sleeve setup I mentioned in the last post with a 1/2" bolt. I've used these bushings. They press in pretty well if you use some silicone grease on the outside.

What do those measure out of curiosity? Like sue to sue at ride height? Shopping for some new ones myself

Drove myself batty last nite trying to find an exact replacement for the stem type shock, the 57 Ford dimensions were close but not exact, found this one which had the exact same dimensions as the one I had but had a dust cover & 5/8" lower mount, the dust cover will fit in there & I already ordered sleeves (&extras) for the front shocks so that's not an issue to step down to 1/2" for the mounting bolt. I'll post pics once they arrive & are installed

Well, it looks like my shock choices are good, now just waiting on my Amazon shipment (sleeves) & then I can install...

 

Thought of snoopy the other day when a friend shared this chevy bodied hot rod with me. Sure looks like they could have been running around the same neighborhoods doesn't it!

 

Last night when removing the rear rims to access the shock mounts I noticed a obvious difference in the paint colour on the rim where the baby moon caps cover, I have never known the original colour that was used, original owner said it was "probably a popular colour he had seen on a newer car at the time" considering the popularity of Inca Silver I had ordered a can of touch-up paint a couple years ago to use on the air cleaner, it was a bit to "grey/darker" than the paint... But I discovered last night it's a damn good match for the shade that been hidden under the baby moons for the past 60 years - which makes alot of sense. So I think it safe to say Inca Silver was the original colour.

An old man I worked for at his shop had a 1938 mercury convertible period rod he was going to sell to me but then he died of a heart attack and his son inherited it and destroyed it. So now i got this old jalopy but thats another story

 

Well the sleeves arrived today (fit perfectly) so right after work I blitzed & got everything back together, as I just explained to my buddies:
"She's mint, now it rides like an unloaded dump truck with new shocks, as opposed to an unloaded dump truck with no shocks..."

 

how those bias plies holding up

 

Thanks been driving it since 2015, it rolls along pretty decent - will cruise all day at 55 mph, had it up to 85 but it's starting to rev pretty good, oil pressure drops etc. & I don't want to detonate the flatty..

Bias plys will have 8 seasons on them this year, no complaints, no weather checking, wearing even etc. All Good !

Aye. I got Sears allstate 4 plies on and they hold up just fine. No point changing them then unless the dry rot gets too bad
