I am learning how to use the english wheel right now, but I am having trouble finding a resource for tracking patterns. The panel I am trying to make is a reverse curve with a little crown in it. I haven't been able to find anything on the hamb, and the only information I have found on the internet is adverti*****ts for books/dvds on the english wheel. If anyone has anything that shows different tracking patterns or any advice, it would be greatly appreciated.

go to metalmeet.com and do a search on tracking patterns. you may have to sign up, but it's free and there data base is extensive.

Lazze on metalshapers posted an indepth photo album on building a 32 roadster. The cowl top has a slight reverse curve. I liked his explanation and how he formed the panel. You may find this usefull. Let me know if this helps.

Being a novice metalshaper it has always helped me to determine what needed stretched and what needed shrunk by simply putting a piece of paper on a part that had the shape you wanted - sometimes it surpeises you. The paper when smoothed into place will become a roadmap of what needs what. If you can envison what the metal will need to do you now have a pretty good idea how to approach it.

    hi brudwich,
you gotten some great advice so far here. definitely join metalmeet and metalshapers and participate . go see the lazze pics (i think it was a dan pascoe album?) for the reverse curve picture .

and maybe we can convince jason into coming back onto the shaping sites once again, he was once a regular contributer.

To make a reverse, you need to stretch the edge with high pressure so it grows, and stretch with less pressure as you go inboard so that the valley you create is blended gradually. Check the curve that you want in the other direction and re-curve it often so that you can read the panel. If the curve is allowed to get away from you, the reverse will be difficult to read. In other words, it may look like too much or too little reverse because the curve that is perpendicular to the reverse is not correct. I hope this makes sense.

The easiest way to make a reverse that I have found is by shrinking the valley insteads of stretching the edge. Using a shrinking disc, you do multiple p***es in the valley, and it pulls and shrinks evenly right where you want it to. Very easy to read the panel this way. As long as you keep the (perpendicular) curve right, the high spots get shrunk until you have the desired reverse. There is an example of this in my shrinking disc album on metalshapers:

Thanks guys, don't know where I'd be without y'all. Have joined metalshapers, will join metalmeet. Those pictures of lazze's workshop really helped, and was able to get it from there. Again, thanks for the feedback everybody. The sites and advice have all been great. The shrinking disc is a route I never considered, still haven't tried yet, but will, so thanks John_Kelly, I will be checking out your column.

Again, can't thank enough everybody who replied. Really was a big help.
