Projects Finally Going to Build a Traditional Rod

Got the rusted out floor pans removed today. Also got started removing some of the top wood. Weather been too cold for sandblasting.

 

Got started sandblasting today. Finally had some good weather. Got all the wood out of the body except the door jambs. It's still in good shape so I'm going to leave it there. Got all the lead off the roof & the sheet metal screws out where the galvanized insert was put in the roof. The lead made it kinda hard to get the screws out because they were leaded in. I used a small propane torch to melt the lead.

 

nasty work right there! Brings back memories that I'd sooner forget. What are you doing to cover up the blasted metal now?

 

Right now we have some good dry weather. I bought a gallon of self etching flat black primer & as soon as I get it blasted I'm spraying it.

 

Got some progress made this weekend. Got the body sandblasted & primed inside & out. Going to put it on my runner chassis next.

 

You are working on my favorite dream. In school I used to doodle your rod, while others were concerned the teacher might call on them.

Update! New rumble & floor pans installed. New lower & upper wood installed. Currently working on the chassis. Just installed new king pins. Waiting on reverse eye springs to lower it a bit. Still going traditional with banger engine. Got juice brakes from a 40 Ford.

 

Photos of how I repaired the holes in the roof from the previous metal cover that was screwed on & leaded around. I’m going back with a stock roof.

 

Pics of installing & reaming the king pins. Used my vise to press in the new ones. Borrowed a reamer from my cousin that he inherited from a family mechanic that worked on Model A’ s long time ago. It worked excellent.

 

Making good progress. Looks a lot better with the galvanized roof removed, holes welded up and going back with stock type insert. Have fun with it, a full fendered coupe is hard to beat.

 

Thought I would update this post. I was planning on building a tradtional hot rod but somewhere I got sidetracked. The car came out mostly original with the exception of juice brakes from a 40 Ford & 35 Ford wire wheels. What sidetracked me was finding someone close that can rebabbit a Model A engine. I bought a engine that was sold to me as a runner. I was hesitant to soup it up because I know with more compression, more carburation, bigger cam & hedder that a marginal engine would not survive very long. So I decided to get it running stock to see how it ran. The car turned out very nice & the engine runs like a top. I replaced all the wood & rear floor pans. I have been having a blast driving it around stock. I'm not finished with it but I'm driving it.lol I wound up with a lot of extra Model A parts such as fenders, frames, drivetrains & a hood. Now I want to find another body and try again at building a traditional rod. I did purchase a reversed eye front spring from Speedway that I didn't use so I have somewhat of a start. I attached some pics of it. The pic at the gas pump was yesterday.

 

Now that's a different type of project creep!

I am collecting parts for my 1928 Model A roadster pickup build and have been thinking that it would be cool to have a stock Model A around to drive for a little while at least. Have fun with it!
