I have a buddy who wants to use my car or borrow every now and then and just last week I told him no. Now I feel like a heal. He has 4 cars not running but could be with a bit of work. My car is my car. I have a strange relationship with it love hate and so on. So do you lend you car or why do people even ask. Its my baby ya know.John

  2. Nope, I never lent out any of my old rides but I'd let my buddies drive them if I came along.

If someone's going to wreck my car it's going to be while I'm behind the wheel. Usually my cars have so many quirks that letting someone else use it is asking for trouble.

I agree, it's my baby and you can't take it.

  3. No one drives my car but my wife and I. Period.

big responsibility there... they wreck, you pay.

IMHO they are rude to ask. I have been offered cars to drive, but would never ask.

I've always said no until last year, and after saying yes that time I KNOW I never will again. A co worker's car broke down and had no way to cover his route. I loaned him my car and drove my 75 FJ40, which at 300 miles a week cost some coin with the ****py gas mileage that thing gets. Anyway, after a couple of WEEKS, I called him to see what was up and he told me it was going to be fixed the next day. A week later I call him and tell him I need to get my car back and he says that's fine, his just got fixed. He brings it back on empty, filthy and completely REEKING of cig smoke, and since I don't smoke I was pretty miffed. Never once did he say thanks, offer to deodorize the car or anything, so from here on out no one but myself or my immediate family drives anything that I spend time or money on.

  8. If its a late model daily and your insurance covers other drivers, then OK.

An old car (before 1990) NO. It will get totaled for minor damage.

My insurance covers any vehicle I drive.

I've offered before, never had to be asked. I did lend my ex-cop Caprice to a friend while we were working on his car. I don't lend any others because it's not covered by my insurance and they all have little quirks that could cause issues if your not familiar with them.

It totally depends on who is asking and which ride. I would let any of my club mates drive my rigs.

In fact, I think we all have loaned rides before to each other. If my ride is down and there is a show, one of the other fellas who has two or more rides will loan one for the show, etc.

Thats the reason I got divorced. I never lent her out, but everytime I left town, somebody was taking her for a spin...

nope, I lent my car to my best friend our senior year of highschool for prom. I was poor and had to work and he was taking some hottie. He ended up getting drunk and putting my near perfect 64 falcon sport coupe into the wall on the highway. His dad had to buy the car from me or I was going to kill him. I hear he still has it.

My roadster has quirks, none of the toggles are labeled, it pulls hard to the right when you hammer it, the brakes pull to the left and need a pump or two, plus its 1850 lbs with a hemi. I dont even want to drive it sometimes.

no way, no one will treat your car like you do. there is a special relationship between a person and their car.

Depends on the car, and who!

I'll let my Dad drive anything I own, because he was a car guy LONG before I was even a wet spot on the mattress. He showed me how to do all kinds of stuff, and watching him powershift a four speed transforms him into a 20 year old kid. It's ****in cool!!

My old beat-up pickup '73 Chevy truck, my '64 El Camino, and eventual the '57 Chevy truck, sure. Trucks are just trucks to me, so they never get a real 'hot rod' treatment, and I'd feel comfortable lending 'em out to a buddy in need, or my Mom to haul dirt or manure or something.

My '31 Ford or '70 Challenger? Besides my old man, never! Maybe my girlfriend, but she'll have to be trained to drive it.

I let her drive my '68 Charger once, and she was used to slow-*** new cars, so it came as a big surprise. She was turning left at an intersection IN A RESIDENTIAL AREA, and just punched the throttle like she did everyday in her Miata.

Well, she got a nasty surprise when the mechanical secondaries on the 850 double pumper opened, and she had all 440 cubic inches pumping out the power to the 3.91 limited slip, which promptly spun both wheels, and before we knew it, she was doing donuts in the middle of this intersection.

She froze up with the car at full-tilt, and I had to yell "Let off the gas!!!" and she snapped out of it. Having 3" inch exhaust got everyone out of their houses, and although we got it going again, the coppers showed up at my house the next morning wanting to talk to me.

She will definately need to be trained for the Model A.

I would be worried about insurance...if something happened to it while he was driving it. Probably not covered. If I was in the car, I would let my buds drive...but to lend it out...man...I'd have to have some money lying around somewhere...

Borrow it? - No. Drive it around the block? Go for it.

You'll really find out who your friends are if they ever wreck it.

My wife has keys to everything I have. The kids borrow the Dakota when they need a truck. I have two friends that I would loan any of my rigs to but that is the end of the vehicle lending. Gumpa

nope.my old man used to say "never loan your woman or your ride out to anyone, they'll both come back with a rod through em!"
    creepy

  23. My dad, and my friend Jon could drive any car I ever own, any time. And my buddy doesn't have a pot to piss in, so I know if he ****s it up, he'll have a hard time to get the $$$ back to me. But if I ever had an expensive car, it should be insured, shouldn't it?

But Jon's a long-time friend beyond all compare. Anybody else can walk. There and back. Uphill both ways, with wolves biting them on the *** every step of the way.

    LOL!

    That is a great line!

  25. I let the guy that helped me rebuild and install the trans in my Stude drive it...once. I let a woman drive it once, but I was looking to get in her pants(it worked!) My kid got to drive it once, and I'm planning to teach my daughter to drive in it. Other than that HELL NO!

  26. Years ago(make that many) my best friend asked to borrow one of my el caminos. I had 4 at the time. He had just gone thru a divorce and she got everything. I throw him the keys to my good running but cosmetic "challenged" 64. Don't hear from him for about a week, then he calls and says he's in Vegas. I'm in Wisconsin. Hell of a road trip. Get calls weekly after that, but don't see him or the car for 6 months. One day he shows up at the shop with a **** eating grin. I walk out to see a painted, upholstered, mag wheeled with new tires 64 elcamino. From what I could tell, it was the best six months the car ever had. Seems he had a good six months too. Sometimes it pays to "be a lender".

anyone with four non-running cars and NO daily driver is WAAAAAY too disorganized and flakey to drive anything but my power mower. The previous suggestion of going over and helping him get SOMETHING/anything on the road is excellent advice. My kid borrows my ***an, and he's very gentle, but I swear, it always feels "different" after it comes back.

"neither a borrower nor a lender be.."

Immediate family can borrow my daily (Jeep), besides that, NO.

Like everyone else has said, it's your baby. Besides being your baby, you know how to drive it, how it handles, what it can and can't do, and you know every nick ding and scratch on it. My wife won't even drive my cars. Sometimes I'll have someone with me, and they'll ask to drive. While I'm stopped, I'll tell them to reach over and turn the wheel.....they usually can't. Manual brakes and manual steering are a real ***** for those who've never used them before.

It's funny, I have swapped bikes to friends, loaned my cars and bikes to friends I trust and they have been some nice rides (and some POS). As
for my shoe box rag top, that remains to be seen. It has the significance
of being the ONLY car, bike, what ever I have NEVER once considered parting
with. It's a good question. I would never loan a rod out. They are all different
and often have quirks you cannot just trust to anyone.

    NO!
Had a "friend" once ask to borrow my car. He wanted to drop me at work and go for job interview. I said no, you ride with me to work and walk the rest of way. Haven't seen him since. Lets see, that is like maby 40 years, but I still got that car. Can't say I've missed the "friend".
