Barn find B&M Hydro. Would love some ***istance identifying it It's a short shaft slant pan. Tag has P 55 on left and UC 3017 on right of B&M tag. 10.5 or 11 inch Torus. Aluminum Bell housing adapter has either a C-5 or O-5 cast into it.. Starter flange is 3 bolt on lower p***enger side. Any info would be appreciated.. Outside looks kinds rough but things are pristine inside. RB
P-55 means the trans was originally out of a 55 Pontiac. The UC stands for Unblown Compe***ion. The 3017 is probably the serial number. A picture would help on the adapter. Hope this helps, Gary....
Guy who ran this ebay action said his C-5 hydro adapter was for an early small block chevy (265-283) http://www.ebay.com/itm/B-M-HYDRO-H...5-B-M-BELL-HOUSING-/261098844225#ht_367wt_946
Thanks guys... Did the SBC Hydro use a smaller Torus? Looks like it will be heading over to cl***ifieds to find a good home
No expert by any means but I believe that they all ran the same size torus at least early on. The stall if you can call it that was altered by shaving the veins in the torus. But just to be on the safe side on torus size let me go measure the one for my olds to see if it is the same size as yours. The one in the B&M for my olds is @ 11". Actually of you measure inside the housing in the inner side of the flange it is closer to 12" but there is space around the actual torus. I don't know how you measured yours.
The caption above the lower right picture reads: "Torus member for Chev hydraulic coupling, right, has smaller diameter and is designed differently than those for all other engines" From what I understand, the hydro only came in Chevy trucks, but yes, it did have a smaller torus. I believe (off the top of my head cause I'm at work), the Olds torus is 11" and the Chevy is 9".
Since you have a B & M bellhousing, you WILL NOT need the one off, special starter the Chevrolet trucks used. Those stock starters mounted in such a way that the solenoid was on the bottom of the starter motor. Left little room for exhaust, and it's really the reason fenderwell headers were even made for the tri-five Chevrlolet cars; other cars used them too, but ch***is outlet headers were more practical. B & M cast their bellhousing differently, and it takes the regular p***enger car starter that manual trans and Powerglide cars took. That's why there's a "recess" where the starter mounts on their bellhousing. The guy that had the ad on E-Bay apparently was'nt aware of that, and could have sold the starter separately for $$$. As already mentioned, the Chevrolet hydro utilized a smaller in diameter torus ***embly. You can use the Chevrolet torus ***embly in other hydros, but not the other way around (have to use the original torus cover however). Butch/56sedandelivery.
Here is a not so great photo of the starter area. Looks like a bolt flange different than the standard stuff
I would think the drive and driven torus ***emblies would, but the flywheel, and therefore the torus cover, would not. Or, maybe the cover would (?), but definitely not the flywheel. Butch/56sedandelivery.
That is definitly a chevy bell you have. And a chevy torus. You will need a chevy V8 hydramatic flywheel to put it behind a SBC. If you want to use ot behind any other engine, you will need a different bell and a special B&M flywheel for that engine to use the the smaller chevy torus. As 56sedandelivery stated, this bell does not require the specil starter. If you need a chevy flywheel, I have some.
Yes , its been about 9 years since you responded to the questions about Chevy Hydros. I recently purchased a B & M Hydro, with a B & M aluminum bell housing for a vintage drag racer I'm restoring. Might you still have a flywheel for one of these Hydros ? Thanks, Greg
