this model a coupe i bought is rusty in a bad way.Kenny (Choprods) is replacing a large portion of the body panels. The inside of the body is rust coated and some rust in most panels.Hell if i cut every bit of metal that has any rust on it he'd have to make me a new body.Is there anything i can paint/spray/coat the inside of the body with once he repairs it to slow down or neutralize the rust? He's replacing most of the roof, the bottom of the doors, the bottom of the quarters, the wheel panels, and the firewall.I wonder if he hates having a friend like me yet lol..........Greg
Humm you rednecks in mo ever look at magazines.. How bout POR or some of the shit eastwood sells. Ive even used stuff from a chain store that worked. Come on this shits been available for years...... Dave
Your local paint suppliers should carry a product called Rust Mort. It actually kills rust. If you had the entire body media blasted then apply the Rust Mort it would not rust for quite a while. It comes in a Windex type bottle, without the sprayer. It can be applied with a rag but I usually cob the sprayer out of a different bottle, it's easier to get it into tight areas that way, like inside doors and stuff like that. P.S. don't get it on your skin!
yea we're all rednecks,we don't get no magazines here.Hell we have a community computer and i had to wait in line just to ask this question lol.Just looking for some first hand experience with products people have tried and had work well.It would take the trial and error out of seeing which product was effective...........
Disassemble , blast, etch prime and you'll be cooking with grease. Here is where I'm at. The panel banging and welding will be a pleasure now, go light with the primer if you know you'll grind it off later and I taped off where I would surely be welding.
There's a really ugly product that Eastwood sells called Core 20 (or Core something) - - ya get the rust scale off, (sand blast or even wire brush), and paint this stuff on (with a brush pref with a brush) - it helps if your a black guy 'cuz when ya get it on your hands ya gotta grind it off<g> Anyway - let it dry good - ruff it up good with a green scrubber or sonething - prime, (or DP and prime if ya want) - bondo - paint etc. ... rust's really got to work to get through this crap... Ya don't wanna get a lot of the Black stuff on clean bare metal - - as it likes to stick to rust pitted things... Freed http://bikesters.com
From one redneck to another! I used PRO-15 seemed to do the job, extremly tough stuff, wear gloves for sure though.
To be the smart aleck, use materials other than steel. If you want to not have corrosion, do what's suggested above and those things will slow it down. But just remember, corrosion happens and it never sleeps.
I like the idea of removing rust like the coupe above. blast-dip-sand ... whatever. ESPECIALLY on the outside where there may be paint eventually inside the por-15 stuff seems like a good deal. wire wheel as much off as you can, wax and grease remover on the grease and brush it on. the por-15 rep I talked to said not to spray it, or you will por-15 your lungs. the satin black comes out a little blotchy.. the sheen is uneven. I'd have used the gloss on my frame if I had it to do all over again. covered my underside of the body with undercoat, so that looks OK.
OSPHO is a green liquid that can be sprayed. Fumes are very strong. It turns the rust black and leaves a white powder you brush off. At your local hardware store. http://www.ospho.com/
Well finally someone with a sense of humor You kinda left yourself open for that one. I tend to read between the lines so I just had go go for it.. The standing in line bit was great. Dave
hey i believe the rust mort you are supposed to leave some of the surface rust when you put it on. my old boss swore by this stuff. blast as much as you can get off, leave some, and then spray this crap on it. kinda looks like chocolate milk. works great. dont get rid of the rust. this cannot be stressed anymore. this stuff has a chemical reaction with the rust to make it work.
I had my 35 sandblasted by a local guy from the town next to us. It rained on the damned thing coming home (it wasnt but 15% forcasted)....instant Flash rust. I scotchbrite green scrubby padded it and coated the whole truck in a product called Mar Hyde Rust converter. I have a little rust here and there hwere I didnt get good ocverave or wher eI have rubbed it off (its been in DPLF90, maybe 50 whichever is Grey) for two years now. Im happy with the results considering my dryer vents into my garage so it sits in a light coat of condensation all winter long.
i got some wanna be por from a paint store called frame saver or something like that. has a pic of a semi on it. that shit is like nails.
POR-15 on th floor boards etc. On the outside, Mar Hyde Rust converter, or another one called "Rust destroyer?". Its like 14$ a can but it goes a long way. probably do the whole car with like 3 cans.
Ive read in the POR-15 adds you can prime and topcoat over it. Is that worth a damn? Ive got a model T to start next, and need to do some heavy rust protection after I sandblast it, but dont know where to start.
