i let my couple close friend drive my cars ut i know if they do brake somthing theyll fix it or pay for the parts atlease.
In the early 80's I had a good friend that had a 67/427 vette with less than 2k on the odometer . There was a guy that raced in the same circuit as us and whenever he came over to see what was going on in the garage , he always begged and pleaded to take the vette out for a ride. Finally after about a year of unrelenting pestering the owner finally gave in to his request. That was Friday nite . Saturday morning at 4:00am the police knocked on the owners front door and simply asked did the friend have the car with or without his permission. He said he did. What happened next was heartbreaking . It turned out the good friend took the car with a friend as a p***enger and went bar hopping for a while .Early saturday morning the friend who was given the car decided to see what it could do(he was an expierenced prostock driver). On a highly traveled city street with a 30mph limit going at what the police estimated well above 85mph , He lost control of the car and struck a light pole on the r/door hinge pillar. The only part recognizeable was the speedometer cluster and the l/r t/lamp. The p***enger was doa on arrival at the hospital and for the grace of God was brought back to life by the hospital staff .The friend was ejected and survived with a few broken bones. The accident was only the tip of the iceberg. The next years were filled with all sorts of legal suits as the damages went well beyond the limits of the insurance coverages. Guess who was legally responsible for everything. I wish the owner was still alive today to post his response to this question. The best suggestion made so far is to help your friend get one of his up and running. Read all the responses posted so far and you will see the pattern of responsiblity and the results of the irresponsible.
I really don't think a "REAL" friend would put you in an awkward position by asking......Period. But you can bet your sweet *** that your "fair weather" friends wouldn't give it a second thought.
No, my dad told me a story about his 69 Ford PU, lent it to a friend to run to the corner store to get some chips while camping, guy disappears for a couple hours and then shows back up, truck seems fine, monday at school he starts hearing about the guy dragging his truck against other people, then comes the clicking, the dude screwed the engine, my dad had to do a full rebuild. Since hearing that, no one but family drives my vehicules, period.
A very good friend of mine and Dirty31 let him borrow his 48 convertable to take to P&P last year. I let my friend borrow my 57 in the 80's (cover car). But he also helped me build it. Its really who your friend is. Myself I dont even drive anyone elses hot rod. Becaoue I might want one like it....
Thanks for the feed back from all very good stuff in deed. She is my baby and I dont like shareing her. Take care John
i never lent my truck. it had too many quirks for the average driver. a few times when i'd had too much to drink i let a friend, girlfriend or family member drive me and it home. when i sold it i had to let a few prople test drive it. typically i was in the p***enger seat, which was wierd, but this one guy who i thought was going to buy it. tells me he wants it but his wife has to drive it. so she and her daughter hop in (4 year old) and go for a spin around a parking lot. i felt sick. she thought it was too powerfull... guess what? its a hot rod ! it is supposed to be powerfull!
If you can't afford to give it to them, don't loan it to them. Or like the man said earlier, Never loan our your car or your girl.... to easy to throw a rod in either one.
My husband has a loaning problem. Always thinks people will take as good of care of **** as we do and that's just not the case. I'm always the one who points out the dents and **** when things come back. Anyway, had a friend of mine who got a free car from her Gramps and to satisfy the karma gods gave away her turd car. I took it thinking if it ever ****s out I'll leave it where it sits and if anyone wants to borrow a car, won't they be disappointed when I give them the keys to the "Bel Air's *****", decent parts runner though.
i'm a ****.......no one and i mean NO ONE drives my cars but me. my girlfriend likes old cars so she bought one and i got it on the road. my friend has his own cars......plus that's pretty rude to ask to drive it.
I like what someone else said, neither a borrower nor a lender be. I've loaned my daily to girlfriends and if somebody needed it to run up to the store or something that's fine. I also mentally write it off as being totalled when I throw them the keys so if it comes back in one piece I'm happy If you don't want it dented, don't loan it, so I've heard. Any project car I've ever owned had too many quirks for someone other than a car-guy to drive. I'd let someone that wanted to drive it around the block or while I was with them, sure, if I thought they could handle it. Borrow it for the day? That would be too much, I'd worry. It'd have to be a very special oc***ion.
Good I need to borrow your truck to haul a load of cow ****! HAHA. It's your car, you decide who's *** goes in what seat, if any! If they don't like it and get mad then they ain't a car guy! MIKE.
well seeing as my truck doesnt take a key to start it (rather a check list....kinda like a helicopter) has 20 switches just to get the engine cranked and running and another 25 switches for everything else (bags, windows, door poppers, fans, lights etc etc) and not a single one of em are marked (and everything is wired in red ) and if its bagged out the trans cross member lays on the ground making it impossible to move....the few times I was asked, I told em, if they could figure out how to start it, they could drive it....the wifie hasnt even driven it (she's getting her own) yep its quirky
The only vehicle I loan out is my 73 Blazer, cuz it's almost unbreakable & no one wants to borrow a car that gets 8mpg and has no heater, a/c, radio, rides like ****, no driver's side window, and is beat to hell. If I do loan it, it's like everyone else, its on an offer out basis, you ask to borrow & You ain't gonna get it. I used to be a little nicer, but one friend screwed that up when I loaned him my extra car and it came back smokin like a 2 stroke, the exhaust was gone and it was 2.5 quarts low on oil in a car that only held 4 quarts (89 Nissan), but he had no clue what happened
I'll lend out any of my cars to any of my good friends/bros. I've lent my roadster out to buddies to take to weddings etc. I betcha at least 3 dozen people drove my roadster,**** its just a car. I've had my chopped shoebox on the road about 3 months and about 10 bros have driven it already. A bro of mine showed up at my place about a month ago.He owns a 54 olds that weve donw alot of work on in my shop.He was in the middle of swapping in his new rocket mill and was driving his dads truck heading to a rock show.I said nice ride to take to a show!He said what else do I take?I threw him my keys and said see you tomorrow(it was out of town and he was staying the night)No biggy to me. The only person I will not lend my cars to is guys who will not lend their cars to me.Which includes my brother-inlaw,hes totally **** when it comes to lending anything but he wants to drive everyone elses cars But hes also got Obssescive Compaulsive Disorder Sixpac,we talkin bout Black here?Tell him its bout time he got something on the road! .....Shiny
Depends if you are talking daily driver or super rare and expensive rod / custom? But generally, there are only about 2 or 3 people in the whole world I would let drive any of my cars.
rule #1 only lend your car to friends that have better or more valuable cars than your's rule #2 friends that have better or more valuable cars than you, dont want to drive your car! :0
They'll do it just like if it was yer ol'lady, they're gonna take it out/ get it hot/ and throw a rod in it!
I have sometimes swapped cars. Fer instance, I have a buddy with a BIG *** truck. I use it, and he gets the little sporty car for a day or two while I haul **** in his.
Nope. Only my brother and my wife drive my cars. My father-in-law needed to borrow my truck one time to pick up some furniture at his cottage - I drove him 600 miles round trip to pick the **** up rather than let him drive my truck off a curve somewhere in western Virginia. Back when I was a senior in high school I let a "friend" borrow my '73 Mach 1 because his car was down. It came back to me with bald tires and every day for the next week I'd run into people asking me why the hell I was doing donuts in the church parking lot. My idiot "buddy" decided to show off and smoke my new tires off the car in the lot across from the school cafeteria. ***.
My best friend and I have swapped cars for road trips and such, but we were both drivine each others cars...wifey drove the cutl*** for about a week while I got the trans rebuilt in her Bronco-it merely confirmed her hatred of the car. aside from that, no. (except for the random gatorade run to the corner store...but does that even count?) I let my mom drive an old monte Carlo I had once...The car came back royally screwed up. seems she couldn't find drive on the floor shifter. the big block did not appreciate the 4000 r.p.m. 13 mile trip from amarillo to canyon at all.
