I got a line on a real cheap 61 ( might be a 60) chevy truck its pretty beat up and some serious rot on the drives side front fender but its all there and supposedly runs anyways them hoods look like something I couldn't get used to but I do like the hoods from 62-65 are they interchangeable should I find one?
My 61 has a 62+ hood on it and it fits fine. Back in the day, the dealership replacement hood for a 60-61 was the newer style. If you can find a 60-61 hood in good shape it brings some pretty good money. Chevytalk has some more info on our trucks and American Classic Trucks has a VIN decoder.
thanks for the info on the hood you guys I didn't pay to much attention to the condition of the hood just how out of place and ugly it was if I got the truck and found another hood I likely would have cut it up to fix the fender
yes they are interchangable the 60s and 61s have what I refer to as the "nostril" hood haha I like them as much as you do 62-66 have the cooler style hood
61 Hood Ugly What " No way its the best part of the truck, Man nothing esle looks look one of these things its an Amercan Icon. A face only a owner can Love"
Can either of you guys or anyone tell me where the vin is located on a 63 Chevy truck? I thought they were on the drivers door or door jamb? I am looking a t buying a rust bucket but I cant find the vin on it. thanks in advance!!! sanpedro
I'll take a peak at mine today and see where it is, I have two 63's. And for the hoods, I have a 61 hood for my 63. I love the 61 hood, I think it's 100 percent coooler.
60-61 same hood diff signal bezels ..gmc totally diff hood 60-61 thats true if your 60-61 was wacked after 62 they would only have the squaure one at the dealerships i like the eyebrow look and am figuring how to install late model 90's Baretta small rectangle headlites in them and not have any in the lower grill the baretta headlites are slightly bigger than the existing turnsignals lenses so imagine if ya will the lower grill with all 53 chev teeth or vette teeth unlees i can find all the chrome pieces for this year! the wheels are 70's jeep wheels not ten hole gm
I'm considering puttin a 61 hood on my 64 , I think they have much more personality... anybody got one for sale?
I grew up driving my old man's '60 SWB Apache 10, same color green, oil guzzling 235 and 3 on the tree that loved to jam up if you didn't shift it the way it wanted. Its an acquired taste, that hood (I like it myself), but having the e brake lever engaged under the knee-knocker pillar was a real treat without a dome light and after a few shots of bourbon. Instant paralysis of the clutch leg.
I also think the older hoods have more character...........I have also thought about making some kind of covered bed by cutting part of the top section of a short wide bed off and using one of the 60/61 hoods with the nostrals pointing towards the back in its place(LIKE A TRUNK MAYBE?) and filling it the rest of the way to the cab, then put tail lights in the holes and use the later hood in the front along with some other custom touches including a chopped convertible top and being slammed on the ground
The hoods look the same from 62 through 66, I seem to remember reading that the hood latch changed around 62 or so, so if you do get a later hood try to get the hood latch and striker that goes with that year hood I kinda like the 60-61 hoods, But I think they look a bit odd on the 64-66 cab, I think they look better on the 60-63 style cab, that has the wrap around windshield, different doors and a dash that matches the older type hood. Dan
i LIKE it! but i think the 60-61 hood would look better on the front (in this particular case) the 62-up might look out of place...
We have two of those trucks. The hoods arent perfect i would Take $100. 00 for choice. Or trade even up for62 to 66 GMC of equal value? GMCs were slightly different than chev had different turn park lights.OldWolf
Not to jack your thread but are the vin # located anywhere else? ie... stamped on the frame somewhere? My plate is mangled and I want to verify what the numbers are. Thanks.
