I have read your entire thread over the last week. What a treat. Excellent job on your truck, through all the struggles and changes. Great craftsmanship. I would use vinyl on the headliner, easy to clean, and a bit heavier= more sound deadening. Look up naugahydes english pub series of vinyl, best choices in ivory and every tasteful contrasting color.
My concern would be heat relaxing the vinyl and letting it sag. But then again the 50’s produced about a million vinyl headliners with perforated material? visually it sounds cool to me
Well I fixed the trans mainshaft problem today. I guess I could have ordered a new one, but the fix was $35 Canadian rather than about $275 after shipping and tax. I found a caged need roller bearing with a 34mm old and 16mm width to match the original loose roller set up. I simply removed the snap ring, dropped in the bearing with. A healthy amount of loctite and put the ring back in place. After that I had to machine the mainshaft down about .035 to match the inner race. It seems to fit great on the bench with all the other trans guts attached. Tomorrow will tell if it will go back into the case without a fight.
It's all back together and back in the truck. I need to finish up putting the floor back in. I spent the day helping my kid with his truck and doing a gear swap on my cj7 so I can ge it up for sale. I will be getting it all buttoned up in a few weeks and back on the road. The weather has been so rainy and cold it hasn't been worth putting plates on it...
Picking away on little things that needed finishing. The rear sits low enough that the u bolts on the parallel springs were hitting the edges of the box when the suspension bottoms out. With this little cut the u bolt will clear and although the bump stop is a little too far forward(I used one of the original holes) it should keep the axle off the frame.
Should have plug wires done in the next couple days. Then back on the road. It's been really rainy so far here.
Although I'm fighting some weird oil pressure issues I drove the truck down to Victoria for a meet up with some friends who are there for deuce days. Truck ran pretty well! Got about 17mpg at 65mph. Was a soggy ride home, when I hit a puddle the water shoots through the pedal arm holes and hits ya right directly in the crotch! That was a wake up at 1:00AM!
That looks so good! In '64 in JC I had a date with a girl who claimed to have been first runner-up in some Miss Teen USA contest. We were headed to the Rheem Theater in Moraga, CA, the place you took the girls you wanted to impress. It was raining hard and I had already had to go back to my house after picking her up to hook up the vacuum line to the wipers on my brand new bad ass Flathead in my '38 coupe. We were following a Greyhound as it went through a big puddle and covered us in spray. Water shot up through the holes around the pedals and soaked us both. She screamed and I heard "...piece of shit...". I don't know if she was referring to me or the '38 but in minutes she was back home & I went to Shakey's Pizza. It was OK, she smoked and kissing her was like licking an ash tray. Pretty though.
Pretty truck! Re: the last story if she laughs, she’s a keeper if she cops an attitude like your example, kick her to the curb, all the pretty in the world isn’t worth the trouble
Swapped out the parts store "better quality" filter for a Donaldson industrial filter like I ran last year and gained back 10 psi of oil pressure cold. It's where it was last summer. The black parts store filter was really heavy and was only half full of oil. Like it was locking flow. Weird.
Pissing around chasing wind noises and fooling with headliner ideas. I made a Masonite panel for above the windshield to hold the wiper switch and a volt meter. Didn't want modern looking material and I wanted something cheap! I used a canvas drop cloth from the hardware store. Washed and dried hot to tighten up the weave. I like the colour and it should age nicely. I need to cut and bend some more Masonite to form the rest of the headliner. Should be fun.
