Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Bruce Fischer, Jul 13, 2022.

  1. We love where we are in N C and the people here and my new shop. We can not under stand changing our T N driver’s licenses over to N C licenses They say we need N C car insurance to get our license but the insurance company say we need a N C license to get the car insurance Then the say you have to make an appointment to get the drivers license. Problem is they won’t have an appointment open till the middle of August we really don’t know what to due due to them saying it has to be done in 30 to 60 days and we don’t want to break the law Any North Carolinans that can steer us in the right direction???? Thanks in advance. Bruce& Teresa.

Hey Bruce tomorrow I'll give brother in law a holler and see what he knows.
He is way south of you, but transplanted from Va.
Nor too efficient. I moved to De from Pa took care of things when I could. Ran for a time with old papers.
    Who cares?

Try getting an appointment to get a license in another county. Guilford is backed up but Forsyth is better. I would think some rural counties would have the shortest wait. You don't have to do it in the county in which you live.

You say that you were told you needed NC insurance? Odd, won’t your current company insure you at the new place?
Or is there some weird thing about NC that says you have to purchase a policy from an in state company?

  9. Call Elizabeth City or Windsor and see what their new license appointments look like and what they say about the process. If they sound wonky as well, I'd be glad to call regional office here.

Just drop by the local police station and have them guide you.
Try to get something in writing to work from.
At least have that with you if you get stopped for whatever reason.
It will work out eventually - will be fine.

It is quite difficult in some North Carolina counties and easier in others. I have found that you really have to have your stuff together when you start this process. When I bought the pickup you see here the guy went with me. He was a long time Studebaker guy who had lived in Kinston for a long time. We went to a local mall where believe it or not the DMV had an office for taking car of the changing of ownership was about all they did Along with paying your taxes. My '65 Studebaker Cruiser was a bit more difficult. I had to make a reservation for an inspector to come out to the house to "inspect" the car. He had a few questions that I had the answers to, but also some that I didn't have a clue about. (Got the care from an uncle that bought it new in Omaha, Nebraska). The inspector know about the secret location and that solved most of the problems. He also came up a lot of info that he really didn't have to have but was excited about. One was the fact that the car was built in Canada and that no Studebakers were built in the U.S. in '65/'66 only, not in the U.S. Studebaker.
If I were you I would ask some of the folks in your county how they were able to get their older car/truck licenced. Good Luck!

First Thing is to check with your insurance company and see if they have coverage in NC.
Looking at this it looks like you need to go into an office of the same insurance company that you are now insured with and switch your account to their office and then you are insured with a company in NC rather than out of state. If you did an address change with the insurance company to your current address my guess is that the insurance company already views you as being insured in NC no matter where your agent is.

Glad I don't live in a backwards state though. Current leadership or what serves for it is brain dead but we seem to live simpler less complicated lives.

Funny thing, I have Progressive and they don't list the license number on my insurance ID cards, Just myself, my wife and the year, make and model and Vin of the insured vehicles. The only thing they care about where I live is how much they are going to charge because of the specific area along with what actual coverage I have.

Still I think that an online address change will probably be all you need. Progressive will do the "ok NC we have to revise his insurance a bit" thing. NC may complicate things or some other states but the insurance company just says different rates plus you have to have this coverage for that state and your coverage gets adjusted.

Yes, my thoughts as well. When I went to Az as a kid, I called Farmers and said “I live in Phoenix now”. But at that time I didn’t have to show proof of insurance to get Az plates on my car.

If I remember correctly once you get a permanent residence in NC you have to change to a NC driver license within 60 days. Everyone with a NC license has to have a liability insurance policy. NC has some funny laws. Even on radio and TV ads it says that the Progressive Snapshot program is not allowed in NC. Whe I was a kid the sheriff would come pull the plates off your car if you didn't have insurance. You had to get insurance and a pay a fee to get them back. I went to Hookerton in Greene county last year to get the paperwork transfered on my car. It was a walk in but I thought it had been closed down after I used them.

Hey Hi Bruce, Did not reach my brother in law today.
Thinking about it today I thought my Insurance covers any place ( U.S. ) I drive. I concur with the thoughts of Mr48chev.
I'll get back here when I got something.

  24. Your insurance agent in TN should have handled the insurance hand off before you moved. Maybe find an agent for your insurance company in NC and he could handle this, assuming the company does business in NC.

  30. Here is South Carolina and since the Covid debacle having to make a appointment has created a lot of problems, here in Anderson county it was going to be more than a month before I could make a appointment, so I drive 30 miles to a different county and walked right in.

A resident of South Carolina must have their insurance in South Carolina, I assume North Carolina works the same way. HRP
