I am working on a 1940 Chevy pickup, 1/2-ton. The front fender braces have been missing for what appears to be a long time, based on the damage I am repairing now. Does anyone know if 1939/1940 braces interchange with any other years? I am having no luck finding the correct year ones, so I am hoping to broaden the possible search range.
Maybe some info here https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/1939-46-chevy-truck-identification-thread.1196560/
This one mentions braces https://www.stovebolt.com/ubbthread...s/1185883/REAR_TRUCK_FENDERS,_1939_to_19.html
My 49 years of owning an early Chevy truck says that if the factory put a brace there you had best have that brace there or suffer the consequences.
You have full agreement from me! They weren't there, and I am repairing the consequences. That and several decades of cave-and-pave bodywork, and some light fire damage.
Should be 39-40 front should be 1946 It’s been a while since I worked in one but I think I made a set
I mean they look the same, but are they the same? I am trying to avoid making a set. It is not that I cannot make them. I need them as a "target" to make sure that have the repairs done properly on these. I have the fenders cleaned up and bumped out, but there are cracks to be fixed They were both in the body shop when it burned down. The primer and filler got singed, but there was no warping. The remainder of the damage to them from the fire was from falling objects and water. This truck has turned into an epic saga. I built the powered rolling ch***is a decade ago. That was all I was supposed to do. Between then and now, the customer has been getting screwed over by shop after shop. Now he won't let anyone else touch it, and I get to undo and fix all of the substandard work.
http://chevy.oldcarmanualproject.com/parts/1929_54/index.htm Hunt through this parts manual. Look at Illustrations first to get an idea where to go next.
yup, old chevy parts books are on the internet, you can look it up. Unfortunately they don't tell you what's close and can be adapted.
The manuals show that they are unique for 39/40, and that is that. I will keep digging for a set, or even a single.
they are 39-40 omly. the 41-46 look simular but are not even close. there usually is a set on ebay for sale, a guy called razorfish always seems to have parts for these in your neck of the woods. i dont think i have any spares, if i have time on the weekend i can look.
We've purchased from him before. Some parts for this truck "went missing" when it was in paint jail. I will send him a message.
