    Hello,

When my brother had his idea of building a hot rod/drag racing car in 1957, he wanted something to be competitive with his friend that had a big Oldsmobile motor in a 1934 black Ford 5 Window Coupe. That black coupe was a daily driver and at Lion’s Dragstrip, took home trophies in the A/Gas class. My brother’s car, a 51 Oldsmobile sedan was fast, but he felt it was not fast enough to stay with the modified 34 coupe.

So, he latched on to the idea of a modified Model A coupe and it would be his daily driver/weekend drag racing coupe. A 283 SBC motor, a LaSalle transmission and Chevy Positraction rear end were going to be the main components. He was also toying around with information from Reath Automotive staff about a stroked 283 including a bore, to make the SBC a 352 c.i. motor with 3 carbs. They said it would be a strong runner at the drags and a relatively smooth daily driver to school and work.

My brother knew of a green and white 56 Chevy Bel Air hardtop that had a 301 SBC motor and that was one fast 56 Chevy sedan. So, rumor had it that his friend forked over some hard earned cash to get the stroked motor to have the only 352 c.i. SBC powerplant on the streets. Now, he had the ammunition to get started on the Model A build.

This new photo of a daily driver Model A with a SBC power would have been a good result of my brother’s original idea. A strong, powerful, daily driver and fast weekend racer at the drags. The orange color was in the color range, but, Red was the chosen color. This current daily driver had all of the “goodies” that would have been on our Model A build if it had taken place.

But, he sold the old 4 cylinder Model A coupe we had purchased to another friend. Then, he sold his 1951 Lime Green Oldsmobile and rolled up in our driveway with a new 348 black Impala. The Model A gas coupe for drags and daily driving just floated away into our late night discussions, as to what if…

We saw this Model A coupe racing in the A/Gas class and wanted our old Model A to look like that one. It looked and sounded like what we wanted in a dual purpose hot rod for the street and local drags.

But, after seeing this orange Model A Coupe with some cool flames recently, this would take its place in our hot rod/drag race build. If we still talked into our old late night conversations, these days as old folks, this one below would be scrutinized and selected over the earlier one we both saw at the same time, in 1959.

The one with the flames just had a stronger dual purpose look with the American Racing Equipment 5 Spoke Wheels and appropriate tires. YRMV
