I see where PERTRONIX I says that it's module should not be subjected to more than 8 AMPS.
Would it be OK to install an 8 AMP fuse on the RED wire and another 8 AMP fuse on the black wire that attach to the PERTRONIX I unit to the coil?

I see where you can install a Mallory surge protector on the the Mallory Unilite set up and am wondering if fuses would work on the PERTRONIX I set up.
Or, is there a better way to prevent the PERTRONIX I module from overheating and burning out from excessive AMPERAGE?

Thank for your feedback. JIM in FL.

  2. I use a fuse on my mallory ignition. That is what a mallory tech told me to do way back when. The mallory draws 1 AMP per thousand RPM so it is easy 7K motor use a 7 AMP fast burn fuse.

If the petronix uses max 8 AMPS then logic says that an 8 AMP fuse on the power supply should protect it.

I'm sure there are better (more complicated, expensive and accurate) ways, but a correctly sized fuse is a good, simple and cheap step in the right direction.

It looks like the Mallory unit gives protection for voltage spikes, not over current, but it seems actual product data is very hard or impossible to find.

Gosh, I hate to admit it but, I don't have the expertise to install
a a current limiter and reverse voltage punch thru protection .
Is it something I could "add on" or does it have to be built into the Pertronix module?
