I am nearing the re-assembly phase after painting my 41 ford pickup and I need to order fender welting or antisqueak material. The truck is gloss black, both body and fenders. There is a myriad of colors from which to choose but I think for my truck I have it narrowed down to black, white, grey or Chrome/stainless.

  2. IMHO, Chrome is for show cars or street rods, I like gray but with a black truck i would call attention to the welting as would white.

If you were going for the late 50's / early 60's and planned to use a white tonneau cover and white pinstripes it would look fantastic,

For my preference a black truck use the kiss method, go with the black welting. HRP

my 40 has chrome (stainless ) that was put on it when it was last painted in the mid sixties, grey is never a color to be used on an old car for anything in my humble opinion... ho hum...

I like that look on your 40.

Where all is it used? I know the rear fenders get it and the front fenders against the cowl. Is it used in the running board seems?

Your boards are covered in rubber so the rubber is insolating them form contact with the fenders. Mine are covered in rhinoliner, they may squeak against the clear coat.

This is a surprising question coming from you, Bill. You're a well known (and respected) lover of all things shiny - - - I would've thought you'd choose chrome in a heartbeat. However, you asked for opinions, mine is black, The truck looks GREAT in any case!

  10. I would do black.... any other color (or stainless) would draw attention away from your other subtle tidbits, nice bodywork, and satin paint......oops, that's the color sand before buffing, right?

Funny, I was on line searching for black welting this morning and that exact thought crossed my mind and I searched for the chrome stuff. I am a creature of habit. And thanks for the compliment.

My wife came out to the garage yesterday and after viewing the wet sanded fenders said "everything was so shiny before and you ruined it!"

My black 51 came new with no fender welt from the factory, so I did not use it after new paint - I used old-fashioned black friction tape (asphalt impregnated cotton) in two layers in the joints, not visible, self stick and much easier to install than welt, seals the joint and no squeaking.

That's the same exact thing you said about putting white interior in it. What is it with you and all this ass hair?

If I was running white covers on the boards I would go white for sure! I love that look.

And like HRP said above, a white bed cover (or in this case a white bed on your truck) really works with the white welting.

  24. I gotta back pedal on my original statement about chrome fender welt, I still think street roads and show boats, but after looking at Marks 40 DeLuxe, it works on customs, but I still prefer black welt on a black car or truck. HRP

She doesn't get it. She will like it when it is shiny again.
It is a slippery slope. You can over do it with the shiny bits and striping. It has been good to hear the opinions and options.
Yes, I found that after your comment above at Carpenters. It is black vinyl with a stainless 3/16" bead. Expensive at $35 for 8 feet. If I get that I will have to buy my Crown Royal over in Oregon where they don't charge ridiculous sin taxes so I can make up the loss.

White panel striping is a definite part of the trucks build plan. As is the white headliner and white walls. Am I seeing white grill bars in that photo? I was thinking it may be kinda cool to paint the sides of my chrome grille bars. Maybe not white but I am considering the options
