Technical Help with window trim/garnish

Discussion in 'Traditional Hot Rods' started by Spike788, Jul 21, 2022.

  1. When I purchased my 1929 Ford Model A Coupe it did not include the window trim/garnishes. There's about a 2-3" chop. Anyone know the best place to buy the trims? I saw several on Mac's and Snyder's but I want to be 100% sure they're the right ones. The rear window trims I saw are steel but the 1/4 panels are fibergl***. Since these will all need to be cut and welded back to fit the chop will the fibergl*** trims be a problem? Including pics of the rear and 1/4 panel windows as they are now without the trim. Thank you in advance for your thoughts, recommendations, and advice.

Don't waste your time with fibergl***, find original steel parts. Check the cl***ifieds here and you should find some. Be aware that 28/29 is different than 30/31.

try Bert's Model A store in Denver. Steve probably has the parts you need.

We make the quarter and back window moldings in fibergl***. Easy to chop if you care to work with fibergl***.

The quarter windows are 1928-29 coupe only. Right and left are the same. To my knowledge no steel repros have been made. There have also been some thermoplastic vacuum formed moldings made (yes, different plastic than used in fibergl***) which could theoretically be chopped and heat welded. 1930-31 quarter garnish look similar but are different RH and LH and from 28-29. The back window frame was the same for all 1928-31 coupes and tudor sedans (except roll down window 1931 coupes). Junk ones can be found at most swap meets, good ones occasionally. Steel repros have been/are made but sporadically.

  6. So today I stopped at Snyder's as they are less than a half hour from me. They told me I would also need the wood kit in order to attach the window garnishes/trim to. Now I'm wondering how you attach the wood pieces to the inside of the cab! Haha. I do see some spots with holes here and there that I ***ume are for bolting the wood to. As you can see from my pics the inside of the cab is basically bare which is how I bought it. Pretty much all I want to do is get my upholstery installed. Just need to know what else needs to be in place before the headliner, door panel upholstery goes in. Thanks everyone. Sloppy Jalopies I sent you message.

You definitely want to get the wood for around the quarter windows, the rear window, and above the doors. I'm not sure how your body isn't wiggling all over without the wood above the doors. Most of the wood around the windows is held in with tacks through the edge of the window frames. If you can't see all the tiny holes, they are probably covered by the gl*** and that tinfoil insulation. It will have to come out to install your wood.

The major components of the wood framework are held to each other with metal brackets. Yours are probably missing.

Hopefully Snyders has a drawing that comes with the wood to show you how it all fits together, and what brackets you are missing. I've got no idea how you would get it installed without messing up some paint here and there. Whoever did the body prep on your car did you no favors by half ***ing the job. You will be very surprised how much stronger it is when it's complete.
