Has any info on a Jones rear housing ( magnesium from the 50’s ) Inside is a diameter of 10” and my guess truck housing ends ( housing end dia is 12.5” ) On a hot rod set up for max mid 50’s style ? Cool factor vs a Halibrand #201 ?
That may be one of one now. I'd hazard a guess that it is pretty well a clone of one of the same era Halibrands as far as mechanics go. We will have to wait to see if our resident quick change guru knows anything though.
It’s new and old, not a QC. Maybe dragrace stuff before. Had no idea of ends was Ford truck based and if so years, plus what gear. I do know a Ford 30/40’s driveshaft boltpattern are equal. But a cool part that might be nice on my 29/32 roadster. I has a #201, so..
That's a 'No Change' Center section. I believe it should be 3/4" wide. It is based on the 3/4 ton Ford Timken rear end, '38-'52. All modern QC parts will fit and there are multiple R&Ps but the highest ratio is 4.11. Let me know what you need and I can help you. Levi Jones cast a lot of stuff in magnesium and from what I can tell was quite a character.
Levi was was most definitely a character. Operated out of Indy in the late 60's and early 70's before moving to Georgia and did alot of magnesium work. Wish I had kept my Jones mag SBC valve covers when I got rid of my sprint car stuff.
What was/is the gear selection for the Timken rears? A friend had an old wrecker that had a warning not to exceed 45 mph because of 5.12/5.14 gears.
Good point @seb fontana , I doubt you could find much for gears that are not for a truck, or a 1/4 mile circle track
Not sure if he still has them but Chucks Trucks had 4.11 gear sets. More common would be the 5.38 and 4.88 gears.
Ok thanks for info. If it was made in the 70’s its not something for me, maybe nostalgic dragracing. I thought it was 50’s.
Well I got the part that GearheadsQCE would have the lowdown on it right. I wasn't paying much attention to the housing last night.
The 'No Change' centers were used where Quickchanges were not allowed and to save weight. About 20 years ago I talked my mentor, Joy Fair, into using one in his late model. We built a QC gearbox to mount behind the transmission. This led to the driveshaft turning the opposite way. We had to flip the ring gear to the right side. By using the mag center, bells and hubs, aluminum axle tubes and gun drilled axles we chopped 125 lbs. of unsprung weight off the rear end. The car just flew but changing the gears was a pain in the ***. The next year we went back to a conventional QC center with all the light weight parts. If memory serves me the difference was about 20 lbs. Car still flew. (Helps to have the best driver in the history of the track and region) Here is a current list of the ratios available for the NC:
Today I heard this 'Jones' might been used on the 50's to. I can expand to late 50's but not dirt track stuff made on the 60's or 70's in this roadster I build. I #201 QC is time Ok and very nice but this is a cool set-up, and even if 4.10 is high I might could live with that.
Finding era correct side plates or bells will likely be the hard part. Halibrand 852 plates adapt early Ford V8 trumpets to the center. But as far as I know, the 11 bolt versions were never made in magnesium. Not sure what Jones might have had that early. @Frames might be able to shed some light on that. Winters and Frankland will fit but probably be too modern looking for your build.
